Star Wars ranks #2, Avatar ranks #15 in ticket sales.

Whew! I've always felt that Star Wars was a much more popular film than that hack movie Avatar (which steals different concepts from 8 or 9 major motion pictures)
But because ticket prices are so fucking outrageous ($15 to see a 3D movie??) that is why Avatar made over a billion in sales... however, they didn't sell more tickets than 14 other movies that ranked higher.

I found this site that adjusts the sales prices for the tickets, according to what year the movie was released. (compensates for inflation.)

I was so glad to see that Star Wars was ranked #2 and is the leading all time Sci Fi film.

Take a look, you'll be amazed at the rankings....

Woohoo!! I just hope they don't give Avatar "Best Film" for a fucking digital cartoon. Fun movie? Yes. BEST FILM? Hardly.

Suck on this Avatar fans. Star Wars kicks ass!!

avatar was mostly promoted using word of mouth, meaning people where telling their friends to go see it and rightfully so.

It generated $2 billion +

What the few % of people feel about the story line or the effects dont matter, it's kinda like having a few schlep webmasters who live in mommies basement hate on the design of your site.

Then you have those who hate anything that is new and innovative, these people have a mindset that is a mix of the unabomber and a jealous bitter girl that just got dumped.

Then you have those guys that regardless of the situation they seem to always say "20 years ago things where better", ya know the people who in 20 years from now when another movie will do 2 billion will scream "this movie is a joke compared to the movie avatar back in the day".

The people have spoken and thats all that matters!

Wow Avatar is "only" #15 all time after adjusting for inflation. How sucky of them. By the way they'll pass #14 Return of the Jedi after this week-end and has very good chance of ending up at #11. Remember #10 Snow White had MANY re-releases over serveral decades. Although Star Wars would still be ahead of Avatar remember in 1997 Star Wars had a re-release and made over $138 mil which is $225 mil in today's money. Sorry Avatar is "only" going to be #11 all time. They suck.

Also remember back in 1977 if you wanted to see Star Wars you HAD to go to the movie you didn't have the luxury of

A) waiting for the DVD in 6 months
B) waiting for it to be on cable( didn't appear on HBO until 1983 )
C) stealing it from the internet

just because it is popular doesn't mean it has any value. most people defending avatar would never step into a mcdonalds or drive a pinto.

A) I haven't even seen Avatar. I just get a laugh that something that is "only" #15 is somehow is not an accomplishment. Not sure why some people are being haters over it. Star Wars/Titanic/Gone With The Wind lovers I guess.

B) I do go to McDonald's on occasion.

C) the pinto was never popular.

I'd like to see figures on how many actual tickets sold on first release only.

That would tell the real tale on which movie was the most popular. That would eliminate all guesswork and/or the insane ticket prices of today and would simply show which movie had the most geniune interest and popularity.

Bottom line is the film industry is a business.

While AVATAR sold less tickets than Star Wars so far, it has made the most money ever for a movie.

Back in the Star Wars days counting how many tickets sold was just another way of implying how much money a move made. Today they cut the crap and get straight to the dollar amount.

The only weak thing here is the haters.

I didn't see where that link showed how many tickets were sold at all. It only showed dollar figures adjusted to modern times. So we don't know whether Star Wars sold more tickets or not. I know I did see Star Wars when it came out. I was a teenager and I paid $2.50 to see it in Lakeland, FL.

I paid $30 a ticket to see Avatar in Imax 3d here in Vegas a few weeks ago.

i'm not discounting word of mouth advertising, esp for movies, but 200$mil is 200m.

i wonder how that compares to the star wars ad budget and it's word of mouth results.....

Nealry impossible for movies made before 1980 an hard for movies made before 1990. Studios never really kept records of that before then.

Inflation adjusted including 1997 re-releases for the Star Wars movies.

Avatar $707,818,700
Return of the Jedi $715,792,100
The Empire Strikes Back $747,154,600

Avatar will pass Return of the Jedi this week-end. Will most likely pass The Empire Strike Back. So what will your point mean when that happens? By the way all these movies are made by Fox so they are smiling all the way to the bank regardless.

Yep. Assuming the $300 mil budget is to believed and the $200 mil ad campaign is to be believed, and you assume the studio gets 50% of box office receipts my math says Avatar has made $800 mil profit for Fox. I doubt you will find a movie that made $800 mil profit just from the theater run.

In the days where you can get anything you want on the net without having to buy it, what Avatar did was revolutionary. That's the argument against "adjusting for inflation", that people just can't refute.

I didn't click the link and was just going by the thread title and OP

I took it as so far more people saw Stars Wars in the theater than AVATAR but AVATAR has made more money.

I just find it silly for someone to argue that Star Wars is the bigger blockbuster IF you adjust dollar figures to modern times. What matters the most is the money the movie actually makes and Star Wars made less at the theater than AVATAR and Titanic.

That doesn't make titanic or avatar better than Star Wars though. Star Wars has made trillions in merchandise, books, video games, etc. Titanic was around when there was virtually no piracy, so that makes Avatar much more impressive.

I'm a 70's baby, grew up watching Star Wars, had all the toys under the Christmas tree (good job mom throwing all that stuff away went I went off to college..) loved everything about it. But don't kid yourself into thinking that Lucas did not steal concepts from different movies to make his story.

Star Wars has been re released to the theaters 3 or 4 times because Lucas is nickel and diming the franchise for everything he can, I would hope its at the top of the list

I saw nothing but actors and directors pimping avatar for a few solid weeks before it's release. I've never seen a recent movie pimped so hard and often on the talk show circuit.
I'll see it when it's on tv.

Star Wars has been re released to the theaters 3 or 4 times because Lucas is nickel and diming the franchise for everything he can, I would hope its at the top of the list
He stole a lot more then just that...initially he said it was a "Western" in outer space...I am sure if you are a western fan you can find a lot of stuff he poached. he was the original Pirate Bay. Basically Star Wars is just a big Tube Movie lol

I love this thread! good reading. Love that youtube video too... I like Avatar, I just think Star Wars was "original" and Avatar was a combination rip off of other films. Yes, Lucas mirrored dog fights in his battles, but he created new visuals, concepts and a nice story w/heart.

I can't wait for them to re release Star Wars in 3D. Now that is a space battle that was made for 3D.

I know how it works. At the end of the day it ends up being 50-50. The theaters have actually gotten the higher % now for weeks.

The 3 new ones sucked balls, so avoid them. (well part 3 was ok at times)

The original 3 are all classics though!

I just find it silly for someone to argue that Star Wars is the bigger blockbuster IF you adjust dollar figures to modern times. What matters the most is the money the movie actually makes and Star Wars made less at the theater than AVATAR and Titanic.
How old are you? Don't you understand that the number of dollars is irrelevant if you don't take into account the value of the dollar itself.

Are you kidding me? $15? Are you seriously bitching about $15? You can't even buy 2 mixed drinks for $15 in NC unless you are buying well drinks.

This Avatar movie is unbelievable. It has exciting special effects.

And so many spoofs, parodies and porn versions of the blue creatures have been done already. What a success.
