Too many wrongly characterize the debate as "security versus
privacy." The real choice is liberty versus control. Tyranny,
whether it arises under threat of foreign physical attack or under
constant domestic authoritative scrutiny, is still tyranny.
Liberty requires security without intrusion, security plus
privacy. Widespread police surveillance is the very definition of
a police state. And that's why we should champion privacy even
when we have nothing to hide.

Another point about privacy and why it's important is children and the ability to protect them. The way things are going, you may as well keep your children 17 and under, especially younger children, off the internet entirely because the kinds of people you don't want finding their private info will end up getting it. Hell, look at GFY and the photos with children that have been posted here in the past.
