Yeah, this is something that happened with almost everyone that worked on design.

That's why the creative briefing and definition of a scope of the project, stages that are sometimes neglected by some professionals, are so important - they avoid situations like this.
But of course, sometimes its's inevitable

About 5 years ago I was working at a website design company when we was forced to produce this. bandetransport.co.uk The top bar the skip navigation and the general layout was all done with the client stood behind the designer specifying where and how everything should go.

Another design had been done but was totally dis-regarded by the client :-\

So true and not just for designs. Some people are so delusional in what they know and what they don't, and no one regardless of true expertise and experience can tell them otherwise. You should see some of the convos I have with mainstream people about domains.

I could relate slightly with my designer & myself. We change this & change that. He says this is going to look shite, so he does it. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt!

Its a fact, that nothing is perfect to everyone. We all have different views & moods. One day something looks right & then another it looks wrong. hehe!

I like getting things perfect to what most of us can relate to.

So fucken true. I had a client once ask me to have flying pigs holding rapped boxed of googies fly in from left to right. If you clicked the box you got a message. It was stupid as she wanted each product on different pigs. There was 4000 types of boxes they sold. I told her she was fired. Mind you this is the 14th day into the job. Fuck that.
Moved to writting scripts, never looked back.

While I don't design I did have a similar situation with a writing job once.

A guy contacts me and asks for a price on blog posts. So I ask a few questions and he tells me basically he wants me to look at picture or two and come up with a 200 word post for it. So I tell him my price ($2.50 per post). He says, "Great. I want 120 per month. I have 4 sites I want to update once a day."

No problem. We come up with a schedule and he emails me over the directions. He told me he would send pictures (or links to them), I would write posts and send them back. He then asks if I can write them in wordpress for him. No problem I say. When the directions come he now wants me to go into a site, pick out two pictures from an update (one hardcore and one softcore), crop them and use PhotoShop to touch them up then log into wordpress, write the post, insert the pictures and use a link code he supplies to link the pictures and selected text then set the time stamp feature for the correct day so it will auto update.

Basically, he wants me to run his blog for him at $2.50 a post. When I tell him I can't do it for that price he gets pissed. I explain I thought I was going to look at a couple of pictures, write a post and send it to him or write it in wordpress and save it. All this other stuff now takes me 20 minutes to do. At this rate I would make more making Burrito Supremes at Taco Bell.

This shit is so funny,but what I personally hate though as a client is when a designer goes ahead finishes the design cuts it up only after one conversation and did not even take the time to show you the direction they were going in before hand because they are so confident in their work.

Designer (GOOD WEB-designer) must know, whats better for Client. In many cases designer work like artist or painter for his own satisfaction and portfolio (not for Client). It like his own work and DOT! Its not true...
BTW, I think 1st re-design (TA-DA!) is not better for Toast site.. It better for personal blog homepage and looks like template.
