Sorry to break it to you, but English is behind Chinese and Spanish. So there you go, lesson learned.

To be fair, depending on how you drew the potato it could look a bit like the UK.

It's elementary school material, for fuck's sake. :disgust

I am going to go out on a limb and say most people that can't find the UK on the map aren't going to be able to help with algebra homework either.

a little note on the education system in usa vs rest of world.

Americans spend alot of time on learning about america in school while other countries focus more of that time on learning about other countries.

I did school in 3 diff countries and it's one of the things that really stuck out. Americans spent 50% of time on america 50%of time on the rest of the world , while in th non-american schools spent 80-90% of the time on the rest of the world and 10-20 on themselves

i don't think there's much truth in that. I would think more people could do a simple algebra question than find uk on a map.

True there are many people bad at math but i have noticed that alot of "smart" people i know are terrible with geography.

heres a perfect example.

I was chatting with a doctor friend and his wife the other day and we were talking about mexico for some reason and he asked me "does mexico run from coast to coast ? " , i was pretty shocked, but even more shocking was , after i gave him a general layout of the area i mentioned cuba as being an island near florida, and i shit you not he said "cuba is an island ? "

wtf , how could you go 40 years in life and not know cuba is an island

american pervert 12-04-2009 11:46 AM

and sorry to break it to you, but if you combine native and non-native speakers then it is the most popular.

You don't think it would follow that most people that managed to get to the point of understanding algebra enough to tutor their child in it, also passed elementary school social studies/geography ?

In theory yes.. but that wasn't the question/statement. The statement was that if you couldnt find uk on a map that you probably couldnt help with algebra.

My point was that americans spend very little time in school pointing out where uk is on a map, probably less than any other country. Now add the fact that most americans use algabraic equations in daily life after graduating and rarely if ever have to point out uk on a map.

These things lead me to believe many americans who can do algebra can't point out uk on a map.

so if everyone else does something wrong, it's correct???

check out your keyboard, does the 1 look like a 1 or a 7?

there is your answer.

At least if you see a number great than 12, you can be sure it is not the number of the month, because there are only 12 months. Unless you don't know how many months make up the year.

I have dealt with schools in Asia, and they tend to be pretty focused on local issues too - its not just our yankee mates that do that
