Why do web hosting companies claim to be Tier 1?

Such as Datahosters?

Hope being rich makes up for the small wanger.

Isn't Verio Tier 1? I'm with datahosters and my boxes sit in Verios Datacenter. Maybe I am a total idiot but doesn't that make them Verio boxes. I doubt Verio feeds their own boxes with cogent BW.

Well, they probably state they are in Verio's facility, which is a Tier-One...that is a fair statement.

I used to laugh when some Webhosts say they have redundant OC-3's, when in fact they have a single T1.

Or when they state they reside in a OC-192 environment, only to find out they have a 10M ethernet handoff from Worldcom...

I love this industry

Yeah that sort of stuff used to irk me too. But if your a small fry you basically have to join them or say nothing about it. If some startup hosting company (a reseller account even) with a 1mbit cap sais "We have ONE MEGABIT OF RAW POWER all to ourselves!" people are just going to fall down laughing.

But I guess for the people that say they have OC192's and all that, techinically it is true if you are in the facility and can expand as needed to meet the bandwidth requirements of your clients.

Hosting with a Tier 1 does not make you a Tier 1. It's like saying you fucked Cindy, when in fact, your brother did, not you.

Also, being singly homed to a Tier 1, puts you in the category of a Tier 4 or 5 (READ: End User), doesn't automatically rank you high on the board.

Data hosters is a reseller company - all their boxes are in verio's own datacenters with verio techs giving the tech support. Its arguable whether verio is even a tier 1 provider since they have datacenters and sell their own bw. Some people dont consider verio tier 1 cuz its pretty much universally agreed that verio has clueless techs and is clueless financially. When you have datacenters for your own lines, is that tier 1? Difficult to say.

Man you people just don't get it. 99% of the time, webmasters are just being "pitched" the same way we "pitch" our surfers on our porn sites. You may say your site has 100,000 pics and not give a fuck that you only have 12,000 pics because most surfers will never figure that out. Same way with hosting, very few people get all the tech jargon behind it, but like me listen for all the right "buzzwords" like "Tier1", "OC-thisnthat" blahh blahh, or my personal favorite from likewhoa "DARK fiber optic 10gig lines" We are the sheep .. bahaha

thats why it would be good to have a watchdog who can verify if hosts claims are true.

If only I had the time, I would gladly start the "Adult Webmaster Protection Agency" but the amount of policing you would need to do would take a staff of hundreds, one section policing sponsors, the other hosts, the other content etc...

If you could come up with a feasable plan to put something like this together and make it "corruption proof", I'm all ears!

have hosts pay 100 bux a year to be registered. have it like a better business bureau, where they can place the logo on their site and the webmaster can see if any of their claims are accurate.

I just posted on that shit yesterday...you would think that webmasters would be smarter....but we fall for that shit ourselves...

Here is a great package of "cheap" content...

These hosts are great guys, I'm sure it will work out...

I worked there for 1 month, bad experience. Very bad experience, but nonetheless, I was asked to put their logo in my GFY sig, I complied, then was asked to move the machine hosting the GFY sig to their network, that never happened.

I basically got fucked for the brief period I was there, so I moved back to NJ.

No, it's not difficult to say. But in technical terms, 'tier 1' doesn't even involve datacenters. It all revolves around existing network agreements and capacity. In very brief words, it means you don't buy transit from anyone else and pass off all your traffic onto other carriers you have agreements with at no cost. No, this doesn't mean that because someone gives you free transit, you're tier 1. Examples: WorldCom/UUnet, Sprint, Cable and Wireless

I'd try to explain it here, but it would go over your heads for the most part, like all my other posts seem to do. Something better explained in person, I guess.

Then the babies end up filing lawsuits or sending the Feds to your door (who rant and rave about corporate espionage and how you're involved in it)...

they'd end up losing money in the lawsuits and getting bad press for trying to bully their way with an independent organization trying to help webmasters.

Didn't slow down the "tier 1" that did it to me.
