Just had a phone call with a Nigerian credit card fraudster.

I thought I'd share a little experience I just had with 2 credit card scammers.

Tongiht while working on a new project, my other computer screen running our Ahmad fraud detection system flashed up an alert on 1 customer. 9 Alerts actually. Some of them included:

- Customer has made 4 x $99.95 purchases in the last hour.
- Customer's IP does not match the City/State of the credit card used.
- Customer's real name is not even close to the name on the email address provided.
- Customer purchased "too soon". (First-time visitors never spend this much money)

So anyway I decide to telephone the card holder. The phone number matches the credit card location. No answer. Just voicemail. I hang up and call back. Still voicemail. The guy's message sounds Chinese / American. I leave a message asking him to call back, and hang up.

Next, I flag the account as "Suspect". When an account is set to "Suspect", the user is kicked out of any chat room he is in, and is told that his account is "temporarily suspended". Our phone number is presented and he is invited to call. (After all, we could be making a mistake).

So a few minutes later, I get a phone call. The caller ID on my phone is NOT the credit card holder's telephone call. I answer "Hello! My name is Mark. How can I help you?'"

The person on the other end of the line sounds very different than the person on the voicemail I heard earlier. This person sounds Nigerian / African / with a bit of British.

He complained that he was kicked out of a chat room and wanted to know why. I explained very kindly that it looked like someone was using a credit card without the owners permission and that we do our best to protect card holders from fraud.

He got mad at me and demaned to know why I thought this. So I told him that the issuing city of the card did not match the location of the IP address. (Yes I know this can be wrong, but still). I didn't tell him about any of the other alerts. He then went on to tell me that he was in England doing business but that he was an American Citizen from Virginia.

He then changed his story around. He told me he has no girlfriend and no job and what else was he supposed to do HERE IN NIGERIA, blah blah blah. And then a few minutes later, he switched back to his original story and changed it around and said "Oh wait I'm sorry I forgot to tell you I am using my server in the United States but now I am home in Nigeria". I told him that I just didn't believe him (nothing was adding up here at all). He then got VERY mad at me. He started yelling and threatening and screaming and yelling like a nutjob.

He then tried to tell me that his friend let him use his credit card. I told him again that I did not believe him and he asked why. I told him I just explained everything to him, and then he got very mad and started threatening me. Geezuz..! I told him if he called back that I'd call the police. He then got scared and apologized, and asked me not to do it. I told him too late, and hung up on him.

I blocked his account (username, email address, ip address) and then voided all the transactions at CCBill.

The 2nd scammer was much easier to deal with. "Caught me, yep. Bye" was just about it as far as the conversation went.

Lol! Thieves.

you have way too much patience for dealing with wild ass 3rd world scamming africans. i got ripped off a few hundred bucks on a nonexistant bmw transmission a few months ago, and the story sounded all too similar. these guys are on EVERY fucking forum on the web, probably this one too... and just so that you know, long stories and short money go hand in hand. dude was clearly backpeddling and you busted him. maybe you were just dragging it out with him for entertainment. you gotta record these calls man.
