California death row inmates cost $135k/yearly

I read that last night. I've been trying to figure out what on earth costs $135,000 a year. They are locked up in cells. Yeh, yeh, "maximum-security"... but still, $135,000 a year? We should just dig a big pit, throw them in, let them figure it out.

Fuck death row. Strap them to a chair and fry their asses. It's worth the electric bill to be rid of people like that.

Oddly enough... I am against the death penalty. It's too expensive and the margin of error is far too high. Although I do think it's a good bargaining chip.

They must get awesome health care!

They're good enough to spend money on, but those outside the clink can die already.

it's not only that death row imates are housed 1 per cell and require more gaurds to watch over them.

I'm not sure why thay think death penalty is WORSE punishment than life. I would PREFER death over life in prison. I guess some here prefer 30-40-50 years of cowded cells, anal rape, beatings and the daily fear of getting shanked. Which hurts A LOT worse than needle in the arm. Sorry I'll take the solo cell and 24/7 protection from rape and beatings and shankings and meet my end by being put to sleep like one would do to a beloved pet that had cancer.

Dude. If you're on death row, it's not for stealing a little old ladies purse. So I guess I am "that stupid" because I believe in an eye for an eye when it comes to shit like that. Honestly, the electric chair is to good for them. I think they should have their hands tied and the family members of the people they hurt, should all be given bats and they all get put in a room together until he/she's beaten to a pulp.

A lot of that number is legal costs. Most inmates cost around 35K a year to house (obviously some states will be higher or lower than that amount), but with death row inmates there are a certain amount of mandatory appeals and legal proceedings that must take place and just about every death row inmate has a public defender so it all costs money. The legal bills add up fast with death row inmates.

I am opposed to the death penalty strictly for this reason. It costs more to put them to death then it would to keep them alive and house them for life.

i am pro death but also anti death penalty. i would be 100% for the death penalty if the margin of error was 0.00000% if we could get it so that no innocent person would ever end up convicted in such a case and sentanced to this punishment then i would be not only for it, i would want the process speed up. though i would be against all current forms of the way they do put them down. i would want them put out with anesthesia which yes is painless, then i would want every bit of tissue, organs, blood, skin, bone marrow, you name it collected and distributed to hospitals to be put to use saving lives.

i do know one of the main reasons it costs so damn much to house prisoners let alone death row inmates. that would be the stupid ass prison guard union. that damn union runs way to much and has way to much power. they have insured that they get mind numbing salaries, more sick days than any partially healthy person could ever dream of using, large numbers of paid holidays, pensions that are nearly obscene, and then special political powers. somehow they have managed to make damn sure nearly every judge appointed has been a district attorney and from law enforcement. they have backed and pushed for tons of laws that could only be seen as draconion so that the number of inmates goes up. they also choose the wardens and even turn down promotions since they would loose money. then to top it off they put considerable pressure on the governors and any state politician to bow to them or face loosing their jobs. grr sorry they piss me off.

One of the main problems is that district attorneys are elected positions and they are pressured into getting convictions so if the have an eye witness that might be a little shaky, they will often fight hard to keep DNA evidence out of the case so they have a better chance of winning. They are also pressured to pursue cases that aren't worth fighting because they know if the don't it will have a hard time getting re-elected. This causes the system to clog up and gives those who are convicted a ton of resources to appeal. If there is DNA availiable it should be in every case. Let's speed things up and cut down on errors. And make DA's appointed so they aren't worrying about keeping their jobs when they prosecute a case.

A great example is a case that was in Atlanta not too long ago. The guy was being taken to court for a rape charge. He overpowered a guard, grabbed the guard's gun then shot and killed the guard and the judge. He then carjacked a woman and got away. The woman he kidnapped talked him into turning himself in. So the indictment alone was over 900 pages. There were 65 different crime scenes and over 200 potential witnesses. They brought in special public defense because all of the locals knew the people that were killed and removed themselves from the case. The defense attorney took one look at everything, talked to his client and then when to the district attorney. He told him that his client would plead guilty to whatever they wanted and he would accept life in jail as long as there was no death penalty. The DA told him he couldn't do that. If he didn't go after death he would never get elected again. The defense attorney told him he was required to vigorously defend his client if that is what they did. So in the end it took a couple of years and cost the city over 5 million dollars in legal fees to defend the guy. He got convicted and ended up being found insane so he got life in prison. What a waste of time, resources and money.

I agree that their organs should be harvested. However, with a margin of error there and some innocent people being put to death, I don't think you can kill them until they've had a chance to appeal, etc. If the legal system was infallible, they should rip out their organs right after the trial.

thats not all it costs....

I believe in many states there is mandatory supreme court review of all deah th row inmates, which I read costs like 50k-75k and up LOL

not sure if cali has the mandatory reviews, but many states do and that cost is not factored into the yearly cost.

Do not forget the cost of pet food. A lot of death row inmates are allowed to keep pet cats to assist in pacifying them. Pet food aint cheap!!!

The US would save a TON of money by going away from death penalty overall.

Personally I would hurt a LOT more being stuck in a sucky prison for the rest of my life than to die. To be put to death is such an easy way out for horrid crimes committed. Maximum security prison, some butt plugging by other inmates, and other shit is muuuuuch better - for life.

I think if your sentenced to death, then the appeals process is over... it should be carried out the same or next day at a maximum...

regardless of our other debate I just felt the need to say STFU... that's it.
