African American?

I have a question, please don't get offended. It's PC to say somebody is African American despite that many African Americans have been here a lot longer than white second or third generation immigrants?

So here's my question, if a black person moved to say Japan and had children, would it be PC to say African Japanese? Or rather a Japanese American moves to Africa and has children would they be Japanese African?

Unless someone was born in Africa and moved to the US, they are not "African American." Even then, they are simply "African" or just "another fucking immigrant."

My feeling is that the whole hyphenated citizenship thing should be done away with. If you are American then you are American regardless of race or ethnic background. It is this sort of poiltically correct terms that help drive and feed the seperatism and tension that exists in our country.

We'll all be "tan" none of us white, none of us black...

Politically correctness is for pussies that are afraid to say what they really think. All the protesting for "freedom of speech" has done just the opposite...

I've always hated the term African-American and refuse to say it. I am NOT a German, Irish, or Dutch American... even though my descendants are from those countries. And I'll be damned if I let anyone get away with calling me one...

Did you ever see that experiment by Jane Elliot, where she devided her fourth grade class into two groups... Blue Eyed and Brown Eyed.

"...In the "Brown Eyes, Blue Eyes" experiment in 1970, Elliot divided her third-grade class in Riceville, Iowa, into two groups based on eye color. The children with blue eyes were told they were better than the children with brown eyes. While the blue-eyed children were encouraged in their studies and given special privileges, the brown-eyed children were told not to use the drinking fountain and not to play with the blue-eyed children... "

I remember seeing that video in either a psych or sociology class. Pretty cool

I think "African American" is a stupid phrase. Don't believe me? Go to Toronto sometime and refer to someone as an "African Canadian." Let me know how that goes over for you.

I seem to remember a talk show once where some PC dildo corrected someone else's reference to one of the other guest's as "black" and suggested "African American." The black man laughed ironically and said, "But I'm not American. I'm British."

I still say "black." I don't give a fuck what the PC'ers say.

Racism will die when people stop thinking about race, talking about race, and thinking they are the only ones with the right way to talk about it.

I don't usually use the term African-American because for alot of blacks this simply isn't true. I have one friend who is Haitian and people always called her African-American which really pissed her off, because well, she isn't. And after a period of thought on this I relized that is is kind of idiotic to mention African-American at all anyway. I mean why do I have to use it as an adjective? So I just stopped.

Here we go again..

I dislike the terminology "African American," "Asian American," etc; however, the problem with this discussion is that most folks have assumed the terms African American and black are interchangeable, when they really are not.

"African-American" was created to mean a specific created ethnic group in America-- the descendants of black slaves. In this way it is perhaps slightly different than other "hypenated" terms.

"Black" is a color or a constructed racial identity, it isn't an ethnicity.

So, the answer to your question is no.

However, generally it is society that forces you into the role of an outsider, and labels you as such. Religious and ethnic groups don't generally choose to seperate themselves, except when they gain a disctinct organization advantage from their persecution like the "Mormons."

>>
Racism will die when people stop thinking about race, talking about race, and thinking they are the only ones with the right way to talk about it.
>>

Racism will never die. Too many modern states are built on the blood of ethnic battles, and continue functioning on the lies of fore fathers that are too ingrained in the character of the nations.

Wars over ethnicity have gone on for thousands of years.
The rest of that comment makes no sense.

It's just a bunch of hype over the roots issue.. Some think that because some ancestors from a century ago lived here, they are closely connected, so they feel some need to identify with it..

This place is a melting pot.. Wouldn't it be fun if everyone felt this indentity need?

I can jump my ass up and say I'm Cherokee.. without the need to follow it with American.. There was no 'America' when my decendants lived here. Ohh.. but the pc term is 'Native-American'..
You won't hear the tribes demanding to be referred to by that identity.. Gotta love how the gov't tags the folks in this land. "Hispanic" is another gov't derived term...

Kinda makes this African-American thing a joke at best..

Yes they would, Tony Soprano was born in the US and he's an Italian-American.

Got a one-track mind today.

If someone wants to be called African-american - why not call them what they want to be called? If it makes someone happier or they think it is more accurate to describe themselves as african-american then as black then why not do so?
