Does anyone here own or has used a DROBO?

Pretty pricey and the chick in the demo video is a bit annoying but the thing looks awesome. If anyone has ever lost data in a HD crash this could be an awesome solution.

Using a Drobo for 9 months now and it's great. Expanding is easy and it gives a good feeling i have a backup of all my stuff. Used Lacies before and for some reason they always got fucked up after a few years.

If you're only buying it to protect your data it would be much cheaper and better performance wise to just buy another hard drive and use acronis to back up data. You could also use http://www.hdtune.com/ to make sure the drive(s) aren't going bad.

I'd never buy a drobo because the performance sucks. If you just wanted to use it for storage and didn't care about performance then it wouldn't be bad.

No matter how many hard drives you have in it that's about as good as it's going to get because it uses firewire. Having HDDs plugged directly into the mobo is a *much* better option performance wise.

Normal HDD performance without drobo...

You could do even better with raid, or if you had more than one HDD directly plugged into the mobo for different programs. Such as one playing videos, one backing up data, one for your main programs, and so on.

Yup, I have a Drobo Pro. http://www.drobo.com/products/drobopro/
Filled it up with 1.5tb disks.. and works great.

As for speed, i have it attached to my computer using : iSCSI (utilizes Gigabit Ethernet)- no complaints here
