The absolute BEST thing about the American society is...
Consumer friendliness! I hate the way the costumers are treated over here. I just picked up some chinese food. I told the lady twice I needed it to be vegetarian she fucked it up anyways. When I found out I was actually eating chicken I picked up the dinner and brought it back politely asking for a refund. They told me they would make me some vegetarian stuff. I explained to them that I was not hungry anymore after eating some of this and would like my money back. After consulting amongst each other in chinese they told me I could get halve of my money back since I had not brought them back all the food. No sorry, no apologies no basically they were calling me a food scammer! At this point I was getting angry and told them I would soon start puking and shitting cause my body can not take meat anymore. Meat does not do nice things to your body when you have gone 20 years without it. I would return to them to bring them back the food I had left on my plate and did not bring cause I stormed out. When they saw I was serious they decided to give me money back. I did not go away before they apologised though. After they did I went home put the food from the plate in a plastic bag and delivered in to them in a calm and controlled way. I could have thrown in at them or emptied the bag on the counter but I did not want to sink to that level. Now in the USA I can not imagine something like this would happen. At the Miami show I had a lot of wonderfull experiences again. I remember having dinner at Nikki's Marina. I looked a little puzzeled at the color of the wine. I did not say anything but just looked. The waitress took away the glass immediately and brought us a bottle of other wine "on the house". Now thats service! I wish we could have the same service level and comsumer friendliness over here...

A 2006 New Economics Foundation study designated Vanuatu the world's happiest nation, with Costa Rica at second place, based on a study which looked at consumption levels, life expectancy, and happiness. Nice!

				 | Yeah coz its THAT easy for us Europeans to move to the USA. I tried in 2006 and again in 2007. Paid money to lawyers to help me out. It was a no go. I know it can be done but its not easy at all. |

				 | Yeah I'm sure any place in the US would have given you a full refund, especially a Chinese food place. Haven't you ever been to a Chinese market store in NY? "You touch, you buy" lol |

				 | that only happens in large tourist areas where they are nice to you. in other areas, you have to fight with the idiots behind the counter to get what you actually ordered. i can't tell you the ignorance of people here in central PA, especially when it comes to food service. if you want to find the best waiters/waitresses go to LA. they are always on their toes because they don't know who is in the tv/movie industry and who is not

				 | Face it, your a food scammer! Get a job! I made a rare trip to Burger King a few weeks back and ordered up food for 4 people. Turns out their ATM system was down and I didn't have any cash ( who carries cash these days? ). So they just gave it to me for free.

				 | I've done a lot of traveling and by far the best customer service is in Japan... A place where tipping is considered an insult because if you tip $5 the first time and $10 the next time that means they weren't doing their job as well as they could have the first time... Talk about not western philosophy! The pride in craftsmanship in Japan is unparalleled... I love it there.

				 | Well I've never had better dining experience than in US. Anytime I'm there I always look forward to eat anywhere and never had a bad experience. In three years living in Prague I found only three places I would kind of go for a lunch or a dinner that wouldn't be overpriced, had really good chef AND most importantly at least a little bit friendly service, one was Yugoslavian, one Chinese and one local. Usually, it's just like you feel very much unwelcome, unless you eat at some place where you have to pay 5 - 8 times more the average price.

				 | i spent three years in romania, and while i realized there are a lot of things about america i did not like... the one thing that i realized i really appreciated was the customer service. had a guy sell me a sata hard drive over there instead of the old school drives that i needed, i got home and realized what had happened and took it straight back to the store. he would not even look up from his desk to talk to me... just told me that it was mine, and nothing i could do about it having said that... romanians are generally very friendly people |

				 | It's not universal in the US, but certainly better than the other places I've visited. My best friend and I went to London. We are both very polite and friendly when dealing with wait stuff and other service people, but no matter how polite we were, they just seemed to hate us.

				 | I agree, USA usually is excellent on customer service in the restaurant industry especially. Quite different than Costa Rica, where: - Literally any place I go, on any day, never have at least one item on their menu I try and order. Yesterday at lunch, the typical place I went to were somehow out of chicken (a very typical meal here). The day before, Outback Steakhouse was out of steak! - Nine times out of ten they get something in your order wrong (even if you confirm it with them and speak Spanish). The other time, they won't have an item but instead of letting you know about it, they simply pick something on their own to replace it with (that really pisses me off when I don't like what they replace it with). - When your glass is empty, they either won't come around for ages or they come and quickly take your empty glass away, before you even get the chance to ask them for a refill / another drink. - If you let them know they made a mistake on your order, they get very upset and give you attitude like "what, so you didn't order it but you don't want it and I have to go change it?" - Getting the bill takes longer than the entire meal did. Most times, other customer's items or extra items are thrown on for fun and you have to send them back to correct it, taking even longer. - If you complain about the service or a wrong meal, you'll simply be told if you don't like it, don't come back. The thought of compensation or the meal being free, even in cases where you find bugs, pieces of glass or rubber bands! in your food is ridiculous, you crazy gringo. I think a major aspect of the poor service is the fact the tip is included on the bill. Many places likely don't even give it to their staff and those who do, well if they give you poor service, you can't choose not to tip them, you pay the same as if they gave you great service (though for the few who actually do give me good service, I always give them an extra tip on top of the bill). When I'm in the USA, I do find that at places where I have Latin servers (say Miami), service is very bad compared to any other race. Perhaps, then, it is a cultural thing and not specifically Costa Rica.

				 | Yeah customer service is shitty most places in the world. My girl and I went out to sushi recently and did not like the bottle of sake we picked. The waiter just took it away and gave us a different brand. Things like that do not happen in most countries. |
