I am now a Master *PHILOSOPHER* !!!

Yes folks... The dingbats of GFY, TheFLY is now a true philosopher based on the following proof.

To be philosopher, you only need to *philosophize*!

3 entries found for philosophize.

phi·los·o·phize P Pronunciation Key (f-ls-fz)
v. phi·los·o·phized, phi·los·o·phiz·ing, phi·los·o·phiz·es
v. intr.

To speculate in a philosophical manner.
To set forth or express a moralistic, often superficial philosophy.
v. tr. To consider (a matter) from a philosophical standpoint.

---

And so you see,
You do not need,
A PHD
to be
An Authentic Philosopher!

Now feel free at parties to proclaim with confidence that you are a real philosopher on an equal footing with even the most well known and celebrated philosophers.

The reason I tell you this -- because it is the greatest gift of all to use your mind. Terrible thing to waste. Yes. Yes I know. Well let us continue. How could I become a REAL Educumated Bonerfied *Philosopher* WITH Groundbreaking Ideas from outside of the Academic pool in knowledge. For if you were in that pool of knowledge, the purity of your groundbreaking ideas would be in question... That is why there has been no solid, groundbreaking ideas for so long... It's because Academia has sealed its ears to the inner workings of the greatest unrecognized genius of the world -- that being -- non-Academics.

So here is the solution.

I walk into the University. I try to find someone to "claims to be" a philosopher. Can you imagine this on TV! Haha... So I'm hunting for a philosopher now...

"Yes, sir... I'm trying to find a philosopher. I have to ask him something and I will pay any amount of money that he requires for his time and services as a philosopher! I am in great need!"

"Ok sir, Calm down... I think I can help you, I'm a philosopher... What do you need?"

"Sir I need to tell you that I am a philosopher also, but nobody recognizes me as such -- not my peers -- my other "thinking friends" ... who of course I hold in such high esteem -- because I am an esteemed thinker of esteemed things and one of the esteemed things that I think of is how I esteem my esteemed Edumacated Philosopher friends."

"Ok sir that sounds reasonable. Continue..."

"Now I want you guys to accept a paper by me... My proclamation for the explanation of the universe -- in clear terms that any human could put into reason... And I mean the whooooole damn universe -- I will find every argument and counter argument that ever was put down on paper by any educumated man..."

"Ok... Wow what a paper that would be... (dull tone, but impressed he was) Well How about this... You give me the summary details so I can make a personal judgement on the quality of your thinking... And then if I approve of you -- we can have a conference -- you can give a presentation to the faculty of our school here -- and then we can all exchange thoughts as to the validity of the importance of your thinking and perhaps if we will continue to push forth your ideas so that these ideas are in the universal collection of work that we recognize. Yes yes, that's how it always happens Just dones't happen so often, so the process has never really been recognized until now eh?"

"Exactly. You got it buddy... Gooood thinking!".

Actually, dictionary definitions are irrelevant to philosophy. Philosophy uses it's own set of standard definitions.

Sorry to burst your bubble

I think there was a good point in there, somewhere. I really do. Unfortunately, it was buries in one of your least comprehensible rants ever... and that's saying a lot. ;)

Seriously, though... Like any occupation, its not clear exactly who can call themself a Philosopher. Do you have to work 40 hours a week building to be a Carpenter? Etc... So, sure, anyone who puts the effort into it, and is a lover and seeker of knowledge and understanding, is a Philosopher. Then there is another, specialized definition, those in the academic field of Philosphy, like myself. I don't think the existence of one usage of the word undermines the other.

So, you and I are both Philosophers, in one sense, but only one of us is in the other. I see no reason to exclude you, or anyone else who is interested in Philosophy. You don't have to be an academic to think.

Come to think of it, what you (TheFLY) are saying is actually a good example of postmodern philosophy

DO YOU KNOW WHAT. I only reason that I posted this silly fucking message -- was so that I could get the attention of a real philosopher for my thinking. I said to myself -- I want to talk to a "real fucking philosopher" tonight -- and sure enough I post on GFY and here you are. A real fucking Educumated Philosopher! Look what I have done!!!! It's a self-fulfilled prophesy!!! And within a forum -- live! This moment will be recorded in history forever!!!!!

I was taking a Philosophy class at a community college. It was only my third week in the class when a friend of mine, who was a Superior Court Judge, came on campus and saw me in front of the class room waiting for class to start. He came over and asked me what I was doing and I told him I was waiting on the Philosophy class to begin. He asked me what I thought about the class and I told him that I was having a difficult time understanding what constitutes a Philosophy. He lauged and said, that in his opinion if you have a thought and another agrees with that thought then you have just established a Philosophy. By the way, my favorite Philosopher of old, whose name I cannot now recall (some of you may remember), was the Philosopher that at some point determined that one cannot truly know anything so he never spoke again.

I'm glad I could help validate you, FLY... ;) There are a few Philosophers (in the Academic sense) on here , to varying degrees. I'm just a lowly grad student, with two MAs now, and a PhD a few years down the road. As long as you care about ideas, and think about them rationally, you have my respect.

Don't go around universities trying to find them edumacated philosophers. There ain't any around there. Worthless bunch of pricks.

Philosophy isn't about "having a philosophy"... Used in that way, the word just means "idea". Philosophy is the pursuit of understanding and knowledge, using applied reasoning. It's more specific than the more general sense your judge friend was using, Pathfinder.

Oh, and I think you may be referring to Protagoras. Seems like his kind of thing. Can't swear on it, though. I love the ancient Greek philosophers and their wonderful personalities... Like Diogenes, who wandered across Greece with a lantern. Whenever anyone asked him where he was going, he said "I am looking for an honest man." He walked a long time.

That's a very powerful story. His mind was so powerful that it essentially removed his ability to think... for a mind to turn itself off, just because it could, because it could, infinity.

Protagoras? Seems a bit unlikely to me... being a sophist, he could hardly keep his mouth shut for even a minute I might be wrong though.

Or it was a conscious decision, and he was being melodramatic. Not an uncommon trait among the old Sophists.

You're right... postmodernism seems to implode almost as rapidly as music genres. It definitely makes for a confusing environment...that's what makes it fun. After the war, there was Existentialism, then Structuralism, then Post-Structuralism [Levi-Strauss variety] then Post-Structuralism [Michel Foucault blend] then Decontructivism [Derrida - De Man collaboration], throw in lots of Marxism, Gramscian analysis, a dash of Objectivism and you got yourself a nice little soup. This is not a soup spoon [wink to those who get the joke]

Actually, theoretical philosophy figures a lot into film criticism, the notion of text/subtext/the signifier/the signified. The woman I'm dating fascinates me to no end when she manages to tease out DeLeuze/Guattari, Geertz, Foucault, and De Mans when we discuss film.

Been there too. Then again boning an Alpha Chi Omega sister has its "philosophical" moments as well [of the Tantric kind]
