is there any real way to combat this? maybe if there was a way to put a capitcha on comments would be easier

CAPTCHA definitely helps... just don't use one of those ridiculously difficult ones (Google's is the worst). A super basic easily legible one is sufficient for the vast majority of sites out there...

CAPTCHA is rarely broken and usually only done for major sites where some of the bigger black hat guys (and China, and Nigeria, and whereever else) stand to gain the most.
