i predicted this years ago when google kept denying that they were interested in an operating system..
i dont think google will try to build a full blown os like ms, but i think a lot of people that just surf and what not will be happy with the os and even happier with the performance.. |

I don't know about this. Making a stripped down OS just for surfing might be good for netbooks now. But in 5 years a netbook will have the same computing power as a modern full size laptop or maybe even more. What then? Will people still just want a stripped down OS that can only run a browser when their netbook is powerful enough to run any application?
Apple has an awesome OS and has been around for decades, has an amazing brand image, and still they only own a portion of the OS marketplace. To think Google can come in with some stripped down free OS and challenge Microsoft is sort of silly.

Think of how MOST non-online industry people use their computers..... your friends, family, etc. outside of work. Most use it for e-mail, ebay, buying shit, surfing, research, watching videos, and other minor tasks. The point being, they use maybe 2% of their computer's capacity and resources. Also most of it being browser based. Which is why you have the browser battle going on. The ultimate power comes in the browser for most, not all. |

My new netbook is more powerful than my current laptop anyways, lol.
I need to pick up a new fullsize laptop soon, but I am in love with my netbook for the moment. I just love how portable the little bastard is, and I am always on the move. |

Viruses would be a thing of the past... what's to infect? For these people... they don't need a ton of apps on the local system to run, if everything can be run in a webapp, then there is no chance of being infected.
There is a MASSIVE market for this kind of thing, and if they can get Google OS in an iPhone type environment kind of like Andriod, then they have all the bases covered.

Windows will never be defeated by another OS for desktops PERIOD.
Now netbooks, phones etc are a different story. |

That's a ridiculous statement
![]() Nothing lasts forever. It only takes one company coming up with the right innovation at the right time, and the balance of power will shift radically.

Tough call, I guess 1/2 of people only use the net. If you can save hundreds on a new laptop why not?
