I have the 5D MkII and it is amazing, it will record a clip as long as you need it to if you have big enough compact Flash card. The smallest card I have is an 8 gig 300x Lexar

Page 214 of the Canon 5D Mark II manual specifically states:

"Continuous movie shooting time: Full HD approx. 12 min. SD approx. 24 min.

I just stuck an 8GB 300X Lexar card in and tested it myself and I'll be God damned if it didn't stop and buffer right around the 12 minute mark. Then I decided to call Canon and ask them. I ended up speaking with a 5D Mark II specialist who confirmed that the camera does in fact have that limitation.

On another note if you can afford to buy your own 5D Mark II then maybe you should consider paying off some of the people you owe money/equipment to. Or did you "borrow" that camera too?

So what can you do after 12 minutes? Can you restart the recording? Cause it wouldn't be a big deal unless you need to shoot something long without interruption - like a speech or some shit.

I'm looking to upgrade to 5D MkII especially for my travels so I don't have to carry two pieces of equipment. Having a quality still cam and a video camera in one would make it much easier and 12 minutes limitation is not an issue there. I hardly ever make a continuous shot longer than 3 minutes.

Yes you can restart after a few seconds of buffer time. TBH I'm not impressed by the video I've shot with it at all. I've seen other videos that are awesome so I'm going to contribute that to editing as well as assuming the other videos were shot by more capable hands than mine.

I put the camera on a tripod and shot a video of a tractor pushing around some dirt. When I panned the camera the video got all choppy even while panning slowly. I'm not sure if the new firmware upgrade would make a difference in that or not.

From my experience it could be OK as a stationary camera but not much more than that. I dabbled with it for a few weeks then said screw it and went back to real video cameras.

I got mine 2 weeks ago, traded up from the 5D, I do not use it for video, but have seen videos shot with it and they were pretty good.

I have shot plenty of video. As long as your camera is on a tripod it works well. Not so well for fast panning or auto focus.

I guess Canon should listen to you guys who probably have Nikons, too not put video in a professional DSLR. Nikon user are haters.

The 5DmkII camera is smarter than all of you and me all put together!

Now with the new firmware we can fully control aperture and shutter speed manually which caused the glitchy motion, while panning.

The great thing about this cam is that you can get a very strong cinamatic feel and look to your videos with prime and zoom lenses.

It records full HD 1920x1080p very close the Sony PMW EX1 which I have and own and yes i challenge you "Keepin it real" !!

I have that camera and have been a professional photographer since before there ever was a gfy and this is a special camera. Its amazing. the video is awsome, but it is primarily a still camera...I shoot sony full hd videos.....It opens up your lenses at the wide angle and has a contrast ratio to die for. It is probably just the first shot across the bow, but it is a pretty amazing first shot. I am happy that I bought great canon l series lenses and have committed to Canon. I think Nikon is a ways off this quality from what I have seen

Another great thing about the 5D MKII is man, the battery life is GREAT.

I do not have to recharge the battery all the time, I use the 5D MkII with a IS lens
and it just keeps going and going.

Hmmm. I've been thinking for a while about trading in my 1DsII for a 5DII... both for the general improvement in image quality (ISO3200 looks pretty crappy on a 1DsII) and the video functionality...

One thing I'm curious about: do IS lenses still work in video mode? Does it keep the IS gyro running constantly?

Hmm... I have a 70-200mm f4 IS lens and when I'm using that [for still shots] I find my battery usually runs out before my 8GB card (~420 RAW shots) does. Don't have this issue with non-IS lenses. I'm wondering how it would go running constantly, seems to be a hungry little fellow...

Its amazing. the video is awsome, but it is primarily a still camera...I shoot sony full hd videos.....It opens up your lenses at the wide angle and has a contrast ratio to die for. It is probably just the first shot across the bow, but it is a pretty amazing first shot. I am happy that I bought great canon l series lenses and have committed to Canon. I think Nikon is a ways off this quality from what I have seen

I've been thinking for a while about trading in my 1DsII for a 5DII... both for the general improvement in image quality (ISO3200 looks pretty crappy on a 1DsII) and the video functionality... One thing I'm curious about: do IS lenses still work in video mode? Does it keep the IS gyro running constantly?

I have a 70-200mm f4 IS lens and when I'm using that [for still shots] I find my battery usually runs out before my 8GB card (~420 RAW shots) does. Don't have this issue with non-IS lenses. I'm wondering how it would go running constantly, seems to be a hungry little fellow...
