See avatar... I have been saying for a couple years now that cable tv caters to brain dead entertainment and don't even get me started on the other destructive media bombarding today's society and the youth in particular.

Want an interesting read go out and get this book by Mark Bauerlein titled:
The Dumbest Generation
How the digital age stupefies young Americans and jeopardizes our future
OR
Don't trust anyone under 30.

I swore the intro to monsterquest explains that they are applying actual research and effort to see if things can be found - thus in other words resources to debunk or prove.

Its fairly obvious that a bigfoot or group of bigfeet have been mating with humans for a long time. That is why we are devolving. Because of that fucking sasquash* and his monkey brain.

i absolutely love that show. it's like a train wreck everytime.

they go out and do the most half assed investigation they could possibly do. then they get super crazy "cryptozoologists" and other believers, feed them acid, and let them rant at the camera for an hour or so. it's fantastic.

i've been watching them on an off all day. i guess they're having some kind of marathon. i miss when the history channel was actually the WWII channel and had real, interesting, and informative shows on about actual history.

i don't think its a huge stretch to suggest that retarded tv programming is in part, a reflection of where we are as a society. the average person knows if Paris Hilton farted or not yesterday or who got voted off American Idol... but can't do simple algebra or answer basic geography questions or probably find Canada on a map.

there used to be a time when people actually had great respect for education and art... and kids would dream of being lawyers and doctors and firemen or whatever their father did... now every other kid thinks he's going to be a rapper or a professional athlete and doesn't even have the fucking brains to put on a pair of pants that can be worn without having to physically hold them up while walking around.

this nation has been dumbed down to an almost impossible state of collective stupidity and the sad thing is that its only going to get worse and mindless entertainment is driven by the fact that twitter or facebook et al and an electronic world is causing attention spans to shrink from minutes to milliseconds.

i leave the history channel on because i appreciate history. kinda surprising to see great programming replaced by some fucking idiot trying to hunt UFO's... who never finds them and it gets ratings.

BET was going to be a channel with programming for the African American community... in the end, its nothing but one long episode "Yo MTV Raps" mixed in with re-runs of New Jack City and other flattering movies

Oxygen was going to be programming for women and to celebrate women. In the end, they have shows like "Bad Girls" which is about a bunch of obnoxious chicks being cunts to each other because that's what sells.

the list goes on and on.

PleasurePays, do you get History International? It's what the History Channel used to be before they put UFO, Monster Hunting, and dumb truckers on the network. It's not in HD yet here but ranks up there with Science Channel as my favorite.

I think every generation says we are getting dumber. Yet our society keeps moving foward.

I agree, it seems like society is getting dumber, but it can't be true otherwise our civilization would be moving backwards, and it's not.

i don't get it. i will look into it though. would be nice to have all those channels and also all the discovery channels. i don't really watch much tv unless its the discovery channel or history channel and even then, i just put it on for noise.

you are looking at it like an upward curve. i am looking at it like an arch, where we've quietly past the peak and are heading back downhill

this is a natural part of the decline of a civilization. while indians and chinese worship education, we worship rappers and celebrities who are known for nothing other than being a celebrity.

I think 10% of the population gets smarter from generation to generation while the other 90% gets dumber.

Take tonight for example. History Channel is running a show on the "missing link". A nearly complete skeleton of an ancestor from 40+ million years ago. We are talking a huge scientific discovery and something really cool. But no one will watch it. There will be an episode of the Hills on or a reality show for some person who is famous because she hung out with some socialite a couple times.

It's tough to judge just by TV and what people watch, especially these days. We've seen every show about cops, or doctors, or lawyers, or sitcoms with wacky neighbors, so people just want to watch something different. Even if it's stupid it's better than the latest show about sexy lawyers or a group of doctors who fuck each other then save lives when they have a few spare minutes at the end of an episode.

I would say it's a mixed bag. In some ways, people are getting smarter, in some way dumber.

I would say that art in general is in decline. When you look at music and other art forms, it really has taken a nose dive. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of the new music, but I also realize it's pure shit from an artistic standpoint.

I think you would be mistaken. I think we are breeding intelligent people less and less, or at the very least with economic problems those who might have had a chance wont. Add to that the VERY REAL and documented decline in the bare bones educational system.

You want a perfect example of how smart we're NOT? Check this timeline out.
1. All communications via letters sent by post.
2. Yippee, we get the telegraph and now communicate via signals down a wire. The communication is dashes and dots, Morse Code.
3. Holy shit... Here comes the phone. I can hear their voices. Still restricted to a wire or land line.
4. Now things get trippy... WE DISCOVER RADIO WAVES! And are able to communicate over long distances with NO WIRE. That shits magic.
5. Now there seems to be a large gap in history before we come up with any real new ideas.
6. Cell phones begin to arrive on the scene but they are little more than giant ass walkie talkies you can use as a lethal weapon.
7. Technology finds its fucking stride and takes off faster than the delorean in back to the future. It begins moving so fast nobody can keep up and cellphones become smaller and smaller.
8. And then someone has the genius idea of taking the advanced technology backwards several decades by allowing cellphones to be used like walkie talkies again. Click a button and talk, release the button and wait for response.
9. Then someone had another bizarre holy shit moment and said WAIT! Why stop there, lets really NOT maximize the use of our technology and the astounding happens. We go back to an over glorified version of the telegraph with text messaging.

Now how is that for idiocracy?

I hear what you are saying and that would actually make a pretty good stand up routine. It reminds me of something George Carlin would do.

But communication evolves, people gravitate towards what is most efficient and if text messages are, then they just are. If somehow smoke signals were more efficient, we would use those.

The way the language is used is a little more troublesome. Like everyone saying "literally" when in fact they mean "figuratively" and it seems to be pretty much accepted now.

Hope one day you will understand that English is a living language and thus should also be evolving. We may typically have a smaller verbal vocabulary than some in the past but with fewer words the same thoughts are conveyed. Text or net speak is not actually English, it is another one of many universal languages. Morse Code was something along the same lines along with stenography.

After reading that list; just wow! Continue on with your thoughts and beliefs. You sure pegged history and development without leaving anything out.

Good one PP,

I couldn't agree more.

I was interested the first couple of episodes that aired.. and then I noticed something:

Absolutely zero fucking evidence.

Just like Ghost Hunters, and all that other shit. UFO hunters sucks too, but I do like well put together documentaries on the subject, because they actually do have evidence and credible witnesses and interviewees.

So after watching 2-3 episodes of this garbage, and seeing dumb people huddled together in the jungle looking for sounds.. I gave up.

Good call.

I don't think you understand what I am saying at all, but even after I explain it you will come back and say you did.

I understand language evolves, otherwise we would still be grunting at each other like cavemen. What I am talking about is taking whole words and cramming them into an acronym which I actually don't mind, I do it myself. I mostly refer to shit like, cuz or cause instead of because or any variation or misuse of words in sentence structure. If I remember right even YOU correct people on here of there grammar skills including me at one time. "I could of" when it should be "I could have". Or even just plain using words in cases they don't fit. Irregardless, which gets said more often than the proper regardless.

That is what I refer too. NOT the free flowing and evolving language.

And if you pulled your mind out of your holier than thou attitude you would see I was taking ONE example, as i stated, which was communication. Understand that? I wasn't talking about any other part of history or technological advancements. If you didn't get it I can't help you there. Although you do seem smart enough so...

Telegraphs we're not mobile.
But very funny and Carlineseque as mentioned!

I am more concerned with what communication via text message and online social networks is doing to the "me generation's" problem solving abilities, reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Advances in social technology may be conditioning the dumbest consumer herd ever...

I don't own a TV that would get channels for 4 years now.

There are maybe 2 pct. programs including sports that would not be made in an "entertaining" way which is exactly what I do not want to, especially when it deals with history or news or anything factual, which are very much the only things I look for as I can't stand adverts during watching a movie.

I'm considering getting German TV though, they have some channels that are rather decent with interesting historical documents, debates etc. I'm very lucky that I speak and understand German.

I don't think I'll ever be able to get used to the "commercial" TV again though.

Exactly!

Add:

- most superficial standards of communication in mass media ever

I'm always terrified about all those trendy people using all those trendy slang words resulting in an incredibly trendy dumb program

- no real role models / authorities

mainly fake celebrities without ANYTHING to look up to apart from money

- spending more and more time in the virtual world and not using REAL social skills

the same as if you hide behind the wheel in a car and solve your internal issues in an idiotic way, now besides the road rage we have the web2.0. rage. web2.0 narcissism, web2.0. ego building etc. the way to hide your very own issues behind an online mask

- the unlimited access to information over the internet is a great thing

but 95 pct. of users of the web are only using it to look for bullshit and other mediocre user submitted input, resulting in a massive explosion and praising of collective dumbness and mediocrity

- the phenomenon of constant and immediate satisfaction

from the very childhood these people are bombed with TV and Internet etc. that massively lowers their abilities to sit down, think, concentrate and observe with clue

Just a couple things that come to my mind.

yeah. i think we are headed in that direction. i have always felt this is a problem with the human race. when we are putting warning stickers on a hair dryer, telling people not to use it in the shower, we've pretty much quietly admitted that we're on our way out as a species on this planet.

Want an interesting read go out and get this book by Mark Bauerlein titled:
The Dumbest Generation
How the digital age stupefies young Americans and jeopardizes our future
OR
Don't trust anyone under 30.

Not sure if you read my other post further up but there is already a book out on exactly this:

THE DUMBEST GENERATION
