going "Bio" is great fun for all!
OK, so we've had been getting our veggies from our farmers market under the Bio umbrella for 2 years now and will never go back to supermarket veggies, but this year, I decided to have a bash myself....
so back in March, I set out a small plot of land in the garden to do our own veggies. Ploughed it over, got in a tonne of compost, turned it in did all the shenanigans to make shit grow and then seeded lots and lots of different things. 3 months later - this patch of bare land has knocked me sideways - it's really hard to walk around the veggies, and it's already, so soon after feeding us and the taste is even better than the biological farmers market.... So far, we're regularly (since 2 weeks now) cutting off a lettuces for a salad, with the mint and chives that are growing around, harvesting the first batch of new potatoes, cucumbers, radishes and peas this weekend. The first batch of tomatoes are starting to go yellow ready in a couple of weeks. The carrots are starting to fatten up together with the radishes. Many batches of strawberry have already gone down and the rasberries are soon to follow. The corgettes and turnip - fuck knows when they'll produce, but shit man those plants are huuuuuge! Looking after a veggie patch for only 3 months has really opened my eyes - this shit is amazing and well, shit just growsand feeds you!! And great fun getting the kids involved too! Tips: Being a bio garden, none of that shit nasty stuff - these tried and test (this year) methods I picked off the interwebs really DO work: 1. plants chives around to prevent greenfly. 2. plant "oreille d'inde" what the fuck are those things in english, memory is failing me - really popular plant with big orange or orange/red flowers... anyway, plant them in between the tomatoes to prevent infestation with nematodes (they attack the roots and the stem) 3. Plant rosemary fricking everywhere cos lots of nasties can't stand that 4. Plant mint bordering the veggie patch - can't remember what it prevents, but it isn't in my veggies anyway! and in any case, it goes great with a tomato salad or with lamb 5. little yellow sticky things are great for attracting and killing white fly (and green/black fly too ) 6. little blue sticky things are great for attracting and killing regular flies/thrips 7. fruit tree pheromones (pear/peach/apple/olive/prune have all been tested) attached to a sticky "house" are out of this world amazing - for each pheromone trap, I've a totally different fly/moth trapped. These little fuckers have been attacking my fruits for years, but not this year!!! Into gardening? Any more tips?
