Most real tennis shops (as opposed to Department Stores, outlet sports shops, etc) have loaner programs so that you can test racquets before purchasing them.

The staff at tennis shops are usually happy to recommend a racquet tailored to your particular experience level and style of play.

It is good to buy twin racquets with the same string tension so that if you break a string mid-match, you have a back up (I buy triplets in the $300 range, but that's because I m a semi-serious USTA league player, and have been so for a long time).

Personally I like Prince racquets and K-Swiss shoes, but it all comes down to personal preference.

I hear that Cory from WEGcash is a pretty good player...

It's like with camera equipment - test at local shops and then buy from B&H.

We pay a friggin' 9.25% sales tax where I live here in California, so you are crazy to not purchase online out-of-state here.

It sucks for the brick and mortar stores, but saving 9.25%, plus online discounts is pretty hard to pass up.

Good luck!

I've been a tennis player since age 5. Went through the national junior circuit, played Division 1 college at UNLV. I can tell you right now that most chain retailers will give you no insight as to which racket you should use. Nobody can figure out what you need except you.

A lot of it depends on your style (serve and volley, baseliner, powers, finesse, etc.)

If I were you, and you are serious about playing, up your budget to around the $150 range, and you'll have something a little better than a toy. The Wilson K-Factor series has a nice selection based on play types, and the prices are decent on Ebay.

As for the whole "gay" connotation...It's what most males say about the sport, because the real tennis players get endless buffets of snatch thrown at them. When I was playing as a junior, we were the ones hooking up with the hottie female tennis cuties, while the rest of the guys were just trying to get peeks up their skirts.

I used to have a bad ass racket that I loved,

they say old people liked to play with it too because of the sweet spot.

Not sure what it was called, but it was expensive and it was shaped differently than the normal racket.

funny i never considered tennis a gay sport, gays like sports where you bump and grind against each other, guessing basketball or wrestling prolly..

i play with head liq metal, it works really well for me, before that i had the head ti radical..
The liquid metal is often on sale at big5 sports for less than $75.

funny enough i use a string called "big banger"...

Basically, the grip you select will be the one that conforms to your hand the best. If you go too small, you'll blister up easily, but you can always apply an overgrip, as most players do anyway. If you go too big, you'll lose power and control, and you can never decrease the size. I always suggest going smaller and building up if need be. You will also need to regrip your rackets, so if you go too large, this will be impossible.

The head has more length, so if you are a serve and volley player, this will help you when trying to pickup shots at your feet, or lunging out wide towards attempted passing shots. If you are a baseliner, stick with the shorter racket.

The larger head size will increase power, while the smaller will improve control. However, both are oversized, so you will have less control and more power. Basically, if you tend to hit a lot in the net, you'll need a larger head size...If you tend to hit balls into the back fence, go with a standard sized head: 95 to 100 inches.

Hope this helps!

just go to a models or sports authority in your city, they always have sales on tennis racquets. I think I paid for a cheap wilson racquet under $50, works pretty good. My wife pissed me off buying a $350 japanese tennis racquet from the most expensive sporting goods store in NYC called paragon sports...waste of money unless your going pro.

I was on my way to go pro, and I've never paid more than $300 for a racket. Then again I was always sponsored, but I still never used a racket that was valued over $200.

The one she got is a Yonex, nice looking light racket...now I told her if something breaks on it you have to get it repaired...the cheap ones you just buy a new one. Tennis is a great game...but I still lack the cool stroke since I am 1st a Handball player and you don't need to follow through on the swing. The wife took lessons in Japan and has the little skirts too.
