It's not that they think they can beat the army... they think the army will join them if there is an uprising... seriously. I think it was based on the fact that they were caught manufacturing pipe bombs and selling them to people in Ohio (across state lines). There were raids in Ohio and Chicago as well. It appears to have been a sting operation where they caught some of them in the act.
