Rabbits Killed, Skinned in Front of Kids by TV Chef

Austria: Popular TV chef Sarah Wiener decided to give her young audience a demonstration on cooking rabbits - including stunning, killing, and skinning several of them. "Sarah and the Kitchen Kid" was being filmed with five kids aged 12-15.

The provocative chef said how their dinner table ends up with food on it is an important lesson for children, and creates "some reverence for the process." 15-year-old Sidney was not impressed, however, saying "It was a horrific sight."

He added that the blood pouring out of the rabbit's neck after the throat was slit was the worst part. An equally unenthusiastic Pablo, 13, said although it was hard to watch, it was interesting. All of the kids ended up tasting the final product.

pretty or not... If you are going to be a carnivore, you should know how it works. At 16 1/2 I took a 5am tour of a packing plant, beginning to end, following the entire process, something I will never forget, it was quite horrific. Didn't turn me into a vegetarian, but did give me a more fatalistic outlook. I don't know what was worse, when they sliced them open and a still beating heart fell out, or the little woman whose job it was to squeegee blood, as it rained blood down on her all day long. People who make movies such as Friday The 13th have no idea what horror really is.

Bah... I worked in a pork processing facility for 3 years.. yes in "Dirty Kill" it's like walking through hell, literally rivers of blood everywhere.. make no mistake, you are wearing rubber boots for a reason.

The only person I swear who I though would eventually go nuts and lose it is the guy either who electrocuted the pigs as they went from staging into the conveyer, or the guy who stuck them in the neck still shaking after they got electrocuted. Try doing that every day, 5 days a week, 7000-9000 times a day.

After awhile, you just desensitize yourself to it all, or else your brain will snap.

Not for nothing but in the UK and Im sure much of Europe and other countries aside from the U.S. - farming, hunting and raising livestock for food is part of the norm. It's not a taboo subject much as it is here. Most of the children and adults for that matter in the US think steak and boneless chicken just appear out of thin air. European countries are far more desensitized to all that going on. Just my 2 cents

it is food for thought, and gives one a pause to think about life and death in general really, even our own mortality..... if we had to do the killing ourselves it's a guarantee there would be alot more vegetarians

Current people may turn vegetarian but kids growing up under the new "now we kill our own shit" plan wouldn't, it would just be normal.. (well.. except for the kids with vego parents i guess)

even amongst those "under the new...plan", there is always questioning of the norm, and especially as people and kids become educated and enlightened and think of the possibility of other ways

Oh hey i'm not saying there won't always be 5%, just saying when it's normalised to kill again it's not going to be shocking. It's not like more than 5% of kids went against the norm 100 years ago hunting rabbits on the farm.

I must have been five or six the first time I saw an animal slaughtered, I've seen my grandfather slaughtering lambs many times, and my grandmother was killing chickens like flies. She used to chop their heads off, then throw them away because they keep jumping for a few more minutes, and if you stay close you'll get covered in blood.

And then I grew up and became a pornographer....

i hear that. I grew up skinning deer, rabbits, ducks, you name it, i shot it plucked it, skinned it, drank its blood. And I was younger than the pussies in the article above, I know I had a gun and was hunting at 10. Probably went without my own gun before that.

then i turned vegetarian as adult lol

oh the irony.

When I was young, I saw a rabbit being killed and skinned. Didn't do me any harm. It is good to understand where meat comes from.

We actually pithed them and cut them open while they were still alive. This was in High School.

All it takes is a push of the thumb to break a rabbit's neck.

I've never had rabbit either, but I hear it cooks like chicken, smaller bones, redder meat. EXTREMELY lean.. like zero fat on rabbits.
I've had deer/venison and buffalo. Good stuff.

In Spain (and I'm sure lots of other Euro countries, though I've never really gone grocery shopping for raw meat in any other than España), they have skinned rabbits in the glass display cases with the rest of the meat.

I saw rabbits in the meat case at Bristol Farms a few weeks ago. The price was pretty steep though it was over $13/lb (!)

Nothing beats a fresh killed rabbit IMO

It sounds like a good lesson for kids. They need to learn a bit about reality. Food does originate in a McDonalds drive through window.

Kids need to learn that their meat doesn't come from the grocery store. Gordon Ramsay did something similar with his kids (who were much younger but I don't think he killed/skinned them in their presence) on F-Word on BBCA. I'm sure they see worse on TV and in the movie theater.

My grandfather had a cattle ranch he bought when he retired so I knew that the cute cow I liked might some day be on the table - and I've never even THOUGHT about being a vegetarian.

He said NOTHING about eating. He said that taking life was his FAVORITE thing to do. "FAVORITE".

Killing to eat is one thing, killing to watch a rabbit die is another.

My grandfather had a cattle ranch he bought when he retired so I knew that the cute cow I liked might some day be on the table - and I've never even THOUGHT about being a vegetarian.
No kidding I grew up around cattle ranches too it was the same old same old. One day gran wanted chicken and suddenly clucky was flopping and the head was thrown to the dogs. It's the natural order of things, imagine if lions had fits of conscience?
