If someone has been unemployed for a year whose fault is it?

I have friends (plural) who have been out of work and on employment for over a year. And complain that theyre unemployed.
So I was wondering what you think, if someone is unemployed for that long of a time, whose fault is it?

It's their fault.

If they really wanted a job they would have one like everyone else.

Obama's fault! The government should provide jobs and housing and health care for everyone just like they did in the glorious Soviet workers paradise!

Its their own fault.

I have some friends here who have lost their jobs, and I managed to find work for them that paid pretty well and while they weren't sitting at a desk in an airconditioned office it wasn't all that hard. Light manual labor, working on your feet, still not that hard.

Of my 5 friends who were out of work, not one took up the job I had arranged for them, and 3 were insulted that I would dare to suggest they do manual labor! FFS, if my business ever crashed and I needed work and money i would clean out fucking toilets, flip burgers, or do whatever I could ... not sit on my fat ass waiting for a cruisy job to come around. Makes you wonder how much people really do want to work .. because work is still out there, even if you might get a little sweaty !

Something is better than nothing, they have to perhaps lower their expectations and keep firing out those resumes until a better position surfaces

Most people don't want to work... they prefer to be coddled. Kind of sad really.

No pride? No self-respect?

I'm not sure what it is.

These friends that haven't been working for a year... what exactly are they doing all day?

Fucking around on the internet all day. Sending out a small smattering of resumes and going on interviews, then going back on the internet and playing.

So they aren't even taking advantage of their paid time off to further their education or learn a new skill?

That right there gives you your answer.

what more do they need anyways? if you can afford to fuck around and play games on the internet all day and eat 3 meals and have a roof over your head, why bother working?

Well not all have been out of work for a year, only 1 of them I think, though most were laid off well before Xmas. Some of them play comp games, some are trying to find work, though none are prepared to actually take work that might cause a little discomfort, or might not be as socially acceptable as what they were doing.

When I see videos in many other countries like India, China etc where hundreds will queue outside a factory every day hoping for a few hours work ... the contrast between their work ethic and ours is staggering. Some of us don't realise how good we have it.

I had a male friend today who was laid off.
He was a big shot wrestler in the 90s... ego got huge.
Is now a struggling indy wrestler and WAS in jewelry sales...

So we get the text, "I was laid off, man.."

And he asks if I had anything internet he could do.
Then asked hubby to hit me up for any jobs I have...
(the skillset I need is typical, oh I don't know, female with a good voice? hah)

Anyways...
Hubby is mid level retail manager...
He suggest to the guy, "You can go apply at my store.."
Guy says, "Will they work with me on hours and will they start me about $13/hr?"

Too high of expectations..

I've never been unemployed. Any time I lost a job I found a new one in 24 hours.

This is exactly why people end up unemployed for a year.

I could imagine someone getting laid off now and not being able to find work. BUT saying that of the majority of the people I know who have been unemployed for that long are happy to sit on their arse all day.

I know guys that have been claiming unemployment benefit for 20 years.... as well as getting free money they get free housing. They are of the opinion that unless you get a well paying job, theres no point in working.

Even better if you can get incapacity benefit here... it's a bloody gravy train here in the UK.

Depends where you live and what level you are willing to lower yourself to. Before I got online i lived in a very small town and there weren't many jobs. Unless you wanted to work fast food. I'd hand out 30-40 resumes every fee weeks and get nothing. Though I didnt apply to the fast food joints.

I don't understand those people. I think they just have to lower their expectations and look for a better job while working the one they can get at the moment.

Instead of looking for a 'job' why don't they look for opportunities? Inventing or creating your own business makes more sense now than ever if you have any sort of skills.

The only people I know that are still unemployed after a month or so of being laid off have a guarenteed return date to their job or are going to school.

If you are unemployed for more than a year you do not want to work period. Not many people are hiring these days with above average starting salaries. I am sure of you took a job with a lower salary and worked your ass off to show that you deserve more money than you may have a chance making some progress. But this is America and most people do not want to work. They would rather try to find a way to make easy money or wait for years and years for that high paying job that is never going to come.

Thats the attitude I see from most who are unemployed for a long period of time. Yes I understand there are not as many jobs out there as there were 5 years ago but there still are jobs. All that matters is that you have the drive to go out there and lock one up even if it is a step down from your previous line of work.

EXACTLY. Your remedial fast food and retail jobs are full of people just there to collect a check. If you excel, you will move up... and you will get into stock options, great benefits, bonuses and the like...

This morning we suggest CostCo to our friend... and he's like, "Yeah I don't think I want to work retail or warehouse"

CostCo freaking starts at $15/hr, yo... for cashiers...

I just don't understand some people.

Many people here who don't want a job get more money on benefits than they probably would working anyway. That's the problem with this country.

If the government cut half the benefits, then i bet much more people would actually get up off their fat ass and actually go find a job...
