MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Russia will build at least six nuclear-powered submarines with long-range cruise missiles for its navy, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry told the Itar-Tass news agency.
The missiles can potentially carry low-capacity tactical warheads, the news agency reported Friday. "These supersonic, highly maneuvering missiles are designed for strikes on aircraft carriers of the enemy if the latter poses a direct threat to Russia's security," the unnamed source told Itar-Tass. "The missiles can be launched at the most important coastal facilities." The source added, "Despite the construction of a new nuclear submarine with new missiles, Russia intends to observe firmly international arms control agreements on equal terms with other countries." The Severodvinsk-class submarines are being built at the Sevmash shipyard, the center of Russian nuclear submarine production, according to Global Security's Web site. The new subs will be put into service for the Russian navy in 2011, the source told Itar-Tass. Russia will finance the construction of the new submarine with long-range cruise missiles, First Deputy Chief of the Navy's General Staff, Vice-Admiral Oleg Burtsev told Itar-Tass. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/as...ubs/index.html |

Spring Sunday morning isn't good time for political debates... but If you trust that the anti-rockets in Poland and radar in Czechia will build against the Iranian rockets, you should trust that submarines will build against pirates of gulf of Aden

Russia already has more nuclear subs than any country in the world, as well as the largest ones in the world (Typhoon class) since the 80's..
They're 175 meters long, that's 575 feet (Rounded up)... They've got like, 40 of 'em. The US and Russia have too many strong nuclear subs, ideally we should just stay friends LOL. Russian chicks can be pretty hot ! (Not the one's that eat their friends in front of their children though)

By the way, if anyone doubts that the Russkis have an inferiority complex and are hostile to the USA, just re-read that above PR, especially the reference to the "enemy's aircraft carriers."
Only one country has a significant fleet of aircraft carriers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_class_submarine BTW.... The History channel recently had a show about decomissioning one of these bad boys. It was like a two year process where they put it in dry dock and stripped it down into pieces.

Id rather Russia dealt with their 100+ nuclear submarines that they need to decommission, rather than just letting them rot with their cargo of nuclear fuel.

You're probably right in the broad scope of all nuclear ballistics. I just know russia has WAY too many damn subs, lol.

I see nothing wrong with Russia trying to counterbalance the US's overwhelming naval military superiority. Balance of forces leads to stability while imbalance leads to conflict. Additionally Russia's rising strength can also serve as a counterbalance to China. A unipolar world has shown itself to be unworkable since the fall of the USSR. Failed terrorist states like Somalia and Afghanistan are the result of this power vacuum. Iran would not be going nuclear in Russia's backyard if they had proper respect for Russian power.

Why would we care? They already have enough nukes to do us in. Let em build more with their oil money. The world has definitely moved to trade as the weapon of choice not subs.

Well the second one with the tank is from the US.. It's some sort of testing set up. The tank fires into it. The other thing, is obviously something some crazy drunk Ruisan came up with.
As for the subs.. It seems Russia never grows tired of placing new reefs on the ocean floor.. They don't have a very good track record with subs, that's for damn sure..
