IBM A series.

Pricey, but bulletproof.

And they don't have that annoying touchpad thingy.

The new sony has a 16" 1600x1200 screen, DVD Burner, 60GB, good video card for gaming...

Firewire and Lan built in...

Weighs a few pounds, but a really good portable desktop replcement.

I'll second the Sony's, have had my Vaio for about a year and love it. The clarity of the screen is what drew me to buying it.

I've owned various IBM, Compaq, Toshiba and Sony models over the years. My best overall experience has to be IBM - hands down.

My current laptop is a Sony Vaio PCG-R505 and has served me well thus far, although drivers are sometimes an issue.
