IBM A series.

Pricey, but bulletproof.

And they don't have that annoying touchpad thingy.

I'll second the Sony's, have had my Vaio for about a year and love it. The clarity of the screen is what drew me to buying it.

My main one is a Compaq Presario 1215 and I'm pretty happy with it still after a year.

I've owned various IBM, Compaq, Toshiba and Sony models over the years. My best overall experience has to be IBM - hands down.

My current laptop is a Sony Vaio PCG-R505 and has served me well thus far, although drivers are sometimes an issue.

I had a Dell Inspiron 8000 for a year. I would recommend that.
