Nobody will pay attention. If they can get all of this shit pushed on to the Australians who are some pretty liberal folks they'll be carbon copying it around the world before you know it. There's already talks in Canada about doing something similar. I also heard that the Aussie gov is trying to pass or did pass a law making it illegal to link to sites that are on their ban list and they haven't even given the list of sites banned.

Can someone from AU clue us all in? Is all this filter thing a real issue or just some politician that wants to pass some law that really has maybe 2% of going through?

From Wikipedia about Wikileaks, one of the sites censored:

Quote:
On March 19 2009, Wikileaks published what was alleged to be the Australian Communications and Media Authority's blacklist of sites to be banned under Australia's proposed laws on Internet censorship.[49] Reactions to the publication of the list by the Australian media and politicians were varied. Particular note was made by journalistic outlets of the type of websites on the list; while the Internet censorship scheme submitted by the Australian Labor Party in 2008 was proposed with the stated intention of preventing access to child pornography and sites related to terrorism,[50] the list leaked on Wikileaks contains a number of sites unrelated to sex crimes involving minors.[51][52] When questioned about the leak, Stephen Conroy, the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy in Australia's Rudd Labor Government, responded by claiming that the list was not the actual list, yet threatening to prosecute anyone involved in distributing it.[53]

They'll have to have an opt-in or opt-out feature enabled at the least if this type of thing A. really does go through, B. even actually works.

I read something about a teenager bypassing the $84 million dollar filter they set up in 2007... (http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/securit...9281500,00.htm) we are talking about the government remember.

Now if you told me something like the Federal reserve bank was in charge of setting up the filter, I'd be a little more worried.

P.S. Notice how we have a new party yet still the same bullshit policy?

thanks for posting that. I read the wiki entry on wikileaks, and when I read the part about the british national party docs being leaked, I looked up the BNP to see what the big deal was. when I saw that its basicly a white supremacy group, i registered britishnationalparty.net and Im going to put some porn up there, white chicks getting banged by big black dicks. Not for any reason other than to be an ass(Im white as snow btw)
Im hoping it gets some good traffic and angers some nazis too.

It's hard to know for sure if this will or will not happen as the government has total disregard for what the experts and the Australian public want on this issue.

Here is some information from good sources of people in the know on this issue.

Cool, so we can make throwaway claims but return to where we've posted if it DOES happen and proclaim we were right.

You can only opt out of the second level list which is intended to offer additional protection to children and/or those easily offended. The top level list cannot be opted out of. I presume the leak is the top level list...

Don't forget that Whirlpool's host was threatened with fines of $11k per day for as long as they linked to wikileaks.

I'm currently reading "1984"... BB here we come...

Filter thing is the real issue. Our Government has always been a bit draconian for a "liberal democracy". The last Government was the Conservative party and they dropped plans to implement an "opt-in" filter due to complaints from ISP's, etc as to it's actual feasibility. The ruling Government (which ironically is meant to be our "liberal", left-leaning party) seems set on it though. They've faced a lot of flak, and the communications minister in charge of overseeing it has been humiliated more than once on the issue but they keep pushing. ISP's are up in arms and some even fighting, as are a lot of people (which is a rare thing to happen in Australia).

So the score at the moment? The Government seems set on it. However, there are two houses in parliament, the lower house (where the Government has a strong majority) and the upper-house where they don't. Here everyone votes along party lines, rarely are they given a choice. So it will pass the lower house, and it will be a very close call in the upper-house. It comes down to a few independents, the "Greens" aka communists and Family First "Christian party" who are ironically it seems now opposing the filter - for political and feasibility reasons.

They are currently running ISP trials on the filter, I am not sure when they intend to push the legislation through. I think as it comes close it will become a big issue and there is a good chance it will get knocked down in the upper house, but there is also a very good chance (judging by how set they are on it) that they will rally support and implement it. I hope not, but I would not be surprised. This shit is just crazy, blacklists, banning linking to certain sites, outlawing vpn access, etc (which I do not doubt for 1 second they will do). Fucked up!
