For you people that are upset about the bonuses

,,,These bonuses were not performance based bonuses. They were retention based bonuses and in fact were not really bonuses but contracted salaries. Because of something to do with taxes the company pays a smaller salary on the books and uses contracted retention "bonuses" to pay what the actual salaries are. This whole thing is simply the media and politicians posturing for the sheeple.

You're exactly right. First of all Chris Dodd has already said that it was the administration that actually pushed to have the provision to allow payment of bonuses in the first place. This thing is a smokescreen for the fact that congress VOTED for the payment of bonuses.

Second, how fair, (or even constitutional), is it to prejudicially change higher income tax for one group of people.

So if you work for a company, and you have a contract to be paid a certain amount. Now all of the sudden the government decides to give the company money, and now they come and tell you that you are going to be taxed at 90% for the income that you are owed by contract when you took the job.

I don't see how anyone can think that this move by congress is a good idea.

I went through this back when I worked for Nortel.
Paying huge rentention bonuses to keep people who really have no place to go these days anyways is BULL, no matter what its called.
I guess if you want the tax payers and the Gvt not to run your bizz dont borrow cash from them.
Then you only answer to the share holders.
You want public funds you are going to be accountable to the puiblic.

Or the govt could have let them fail and they would have gotten nothing anyways, right? I like that plan better (not now unfortunately $150+ billion later). I don't see what's wrong with this law though - the government saves your company from collapse with gobs of TAXPAYER money - you should be thankful to still have a f'in high executive position that we allowed you to still have. Enough executives in other companies are perfectly happy to take pay cuts in this time to ensure their company's success, why not these bozos? Oh yea, they want to be able to pay for their luscious retreats, I forgot.

My only concern with this law is the possibility of a slippery slope starting from this, but I'm not at all feeling bad for those executives. I mean you KNOW people in general aren't going to like your getting bonuses after being bailed, those people including many INVESTORS in your company, why take them? IMO helps to show the issues with how things have been run in that company.

It is all a smoke screen for the Trillion in bonds the fed bought

http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/19032009/325...s-economy.html

This is it. This is the make or break point. There is no turning back. These bonuses mean shit, they are a distraction.

Exactly right. They could always refuse the money and run the company as they see fit. Plus if the employees don't like the new rules they can resign and try to find better terms elsewhere.

Fed bailout - robbing Peter to pay Paul.

The feds are so far in debt to their eyeballs to begin with - and now they're giving these corporate assholes bailout funds?

Following that principle - perhaps everyone on welfare should start their own loan companies.
