My girlfriend is Argentine/German, and have ate at her fathers many times. Trust me, you would like it. They take grilling to a whole new level.

Any society that has people like Dr. Phil who become famous as a result of giving simple common sense should start to question their intelligence. Dr. Phil is not a genius, his advice is the most simple and obvious stuff, but he has achieved god-like status because there are so many stupid people that can't figure out this stuff on their own. Very sad.

Perhaps Americans aren't that stupid.
My best friend is highly skilled at what he does, working on sophisticated electronics. He does it well. He just doesn't know much about geography. Since the US is an enormous country compared to individual European countries, Americans haven't had to be as "international" as the residents of the many small European countries. While this is changing with the expansion of global trade, most Americans still only deal with other Americans in the course of their everyday lives, as opposed to Europeans who regularly deal with neighboring countries that have different cultures.

I do find it interesting that Europeans have such strong opinions on this, considering that there are many more pressing issues to be concerned about. Perhaps the steady European refrain of "Americans are stupid" is a reflection of their own deep-rooted insecurity. You know -- an inferiority complex.

I don't really disagree with you. I don't know how many times that Americans have embarrassed me with their lack of "worldly knowledge." I personally am attracted to learning about outside cultures and countries, but many Americans are not. They?ve been taught from the early years of their lives to look inward. That is slowly changing.

Normally I would agree with you. In fact I'd say this is true in 4 out of 5 cases. BUT - I was VERY shocked to learn yesterday that my husband's great uncle (a man in his mid seventies) doesn't know his roman numerals. Not all of the older generation managed to get a better education then those being educated today. I really was surprised. I figured that roman numerals, like a basic comprehension of world geography, would be something that nearly everyone in the 'civilized world' would posess.
