I do not buy the woman stayed home excuse since I was raised in a divorced family. I also know that both my grandmother and grandfather held 9-5 or 6-5 jobs since they were teenagers until retirement age. Heck even my great grandparents both worked. Depending on which generation they also had added tasks or much more difficult chores to boot. For instance my parents were the first to have a dishwasher, a washing machine, a dryer, and a microwave. Was not until my grandparents before someone had a machine operated lawn mower. Most all of them also had to do other things that we do not have to thanks to availability of so many items at the grocery store.

Saying we have more distractions that can eat up time I fully agree with. Does not really count to making us more busy or us getting more done though. To take it even further it seems we try to bog things down on all scales. Going through some old films and albums I saw how they could build anything from bridges and dams to huge buildings in fractions of the time it takes today. Also find it curious that more and more people seem to work longer hours yet get less done, and even after someone leaves work they still work some more.

I have typically seen it more with ethnic families than I have with your average very integrated leave it to beaver style white family.
Such dinners also were built to leave plenty of additional food to be used throughout the week for fast dinners and typically ones fathers lunch box.
Now, the sunday church thing - making it "we're already together, how about dinner". Makes some slight sense, but it's still no tradition. Neither it Smith's answer, it's still an assumption on convenience.

It's not like either way I've heard of this sunday dinner thing. Still something that is .. well just as you guys put it. Not a tradition or anything normal.

Some quick checking lists it as a tradition in numerous cultures. For instance in the UK it is commonly referred to as the Sunday roast.
Not sure what your idea of tradition is really.

well i've never heard of it. grew up christian. biggest tradition holiday bullshitter's there are.

sunday roast as you referred to is a specific sunday roast:

The Sunday roast is a traditional British main meal served on Sundays (usually in the early afternoon for lunch), consisting of roasted meat, roast potatoes together with accompaniments, such as vegetables and gravy.
I guess only the OP could say if that's what he's talking about. I'm not denying it exists here, buuuuut - as i said, "wtf is sunday dinner" - besides dinner on sunday.

Google shows you pulled that from wiki which also explains it is called Sunday dinner at times. I also think I am the OP in this thread. The point was a more elaborate dinner that was prepared on Sundays usually.

My grandmother would do it from time to time. and my father also but since they did not get along, it was not often.

The fact that you haven't heard of it is rather sad actually. It seems these days that quite a lot of people around the world are, as is already said by others in this thread, too busy and too technology-ridden and too tired and just too otherwise occupied to set aside a day for family each week. An open-eyed look around and it becomes pretty obvious that a lot of people, kids especially, could probably use more in the way of family tradition such as this.

In my own family a lot of years went by where no one did much in this way except for random visits here and there. But after I'd been out and living on my own for many years, after buying a house and living in it for some time, my parents decided to start going out to dinner on Sunday and inviting us along. Before long it became a tradition, and for over 10 years now I try very hard not to miss it. My mother is elderly and not up to going out much any longer so we often have the Sunday meal at their house, and other members of the family often show up. Other times I'll go out just with my dad for dinner, then go back to their place for a visit afterwards.

I really don't know what other families do or what people know of it. What I do know is that whenever someone asks "Are you close with your family?" I can say with all honesty "Yes I am", and having a regular day set aside for spending time with family plays a sizeable role in that.

I suppose the greater question in this thread would be do you think family is important? My answer is I happen to think that it is.

Had 'family dinner' last night. It's the Sunday routine at my grandparents' house.

You asked "Why Sunday? Why not other days of the week?" and I answered you with two possible reasons, ASM supplied at least one more. What's the problem?

You keep saying "It's still no tradition". Sorry but in my family it is. Seems it is in many families. Not all, but many. The fact is a tradition is something a family can create on their own, it's not always something forced on everyone like a big national holiday you can't escape. It's simply a matter of starting to do something, making a commitment to do it regularly, and then doing it. You do it long enough and it can certainly be referred to as "tradition".

"not anything normal".... Well I guess we just disagree there. If you perhaps meant "not common" then I might agree on that, which brings me back to it being a sad comment on society as a whole. We seem to have lost some if not most of our family values somewhere along the way. Maybe people who haven't heard of traditions like this need to stop and take a moment to consider this closer.

It's really not that hard a concept to understand that members of a greater family who still live within driving distance of one another would want to have a regular day to visit and share a meal. Is it?

There's no "problem". Like I said, I can understand the point of having dinner on sunday. But having dinner on sunday =/= "sunday dinner" tradition.

Now this makes more sense. As in, it's not a "true" tradition. It's simply a common convenient practice to have dinner with the family on sundays. Therefore becoming a tradition to the family. And yes, I did mean common.

I think sunday dinner with family is very important thing in life. Of course at this moment I dont spend every sundays with my partents or grandmothers but I reserved all and every sundays for my wife and childrens. I think if family spend more time together than they are more STRONG . For some people sunday dinner is normal dinner how they eat every day , but for me sunday is only for my family we doing everything together in that day.Im off the mobile , we doing tohether breakfest , we cooking dinner together , sometimes beofre dinner we going to cinema . I think every family need something what will be only for them. FAMILY ALWAYS MUST BE NUMBER 1 IN LIFE !!

Sunday dinner is still a big deal at my house. It was that way when I was a kid and it is that way for my kid. I have the most time on Sunday to prepare an elaborate meal. I cook every night but my daughter looks forward to something extra special on Sundays.

Family and tradition is what you make of it. I unfortunately lost both my parents way before I should have. I used to have the friends over that made up my "family" every sunday. Summers it would be bbq's in the backyard and winter I still cooked up a storm. People have gotten married, had kids and moved away so we don't get together every Sunday like we used to but I still make sure that every Sunday my kids, boyfriend and I spend time together. No Wii, no xbox, no computer but us hanging out. Some Sundays its a big dinner and some weeks its pizza but it's the intention thats important.

I enjoy a good Sunday dinner. Heck, if you make it big enough, you get awesome lunches out of the leftovers during the week!

I don't have a big family, so we tend to invite some friends over or go to my boyfriend's parents for Sundays.

My favourites to make are beef roast, roast chicken, or some lovely apple pork chops.
