Fdisk and 160 Gb disks
Is Fdisk unable to handle disks of 160 Gb ?
It says my disk has 8.056 M of space ! Any suggestions? I thought I could use my disks right away ![]() |

fdisk does not make them FAT16. Formatting takes care of that.
I've had similar problems with fdisk and my 80 GB HDD. I'd suggest to create one big partition (use all disk space), then partition it with Partition Magic 8 under windoze. |

finish your fdisk, then format and install 2K Pro with a conversion to NTFS.

What I want is one big partition of 160 Gb Fat 32. I have tried it under windows 2k now. What a shit. I started to format my disk and windows reported that my disk is too big ! Well it's too small. Windows only noticed 128 Gb instead of 160 Gb. What a crap

hmmm..... interesting. Maybe there is a limitation somewhere between 120 and 160.... cuz my 120 formatted out fine...
sounds like you may have to use a 3rd party partitioner.... Fdisk isn't exactly up to date these days... hehe....

Welcome to windows.....
OS Ceiling = 137GB You are going to need to get a controller card (if you have a new board its quite possible that there is a ata100 controller onboard, check your board documentation). Your second problem is FAT32 ... upgrade to 2000 or XP and switch to NTFS (especially if you have a 160 you probably plan on transferring large files). Go into your bios and see how big your bios thinks the drive is. If your bios thinks the drive is 128GB then you probably need this : http://www.promise.com/product/subsy...p?pid=11&fid=3 . Once you get the bios seeing the full size of the drive , then use partition magic to set it up on 1 large partition and windows will have no problem seeing it. Hit me up on icq at 5220296 and I will help you more if Iam available. Rory ![]() |

Description: FastTrak? TX2000 raises consumer-based ATA RAID to professional levels. The FastTrak TX2000 ATA RAID card supports Ultra ATA/133 drives to rock workstations and boost small (or large) office servers like never before. FastTrak TX2000 breaks the video/sound barrier with RAID 0 striping data speeds that easily exceed that of a single Ultra ATA/133 drive. Or use RAID 1 mirroring or 0+1 to protect valuable office data...and take advantage of fast Ultra ATA/133 transfers.

why not just have 2 partitions.. one for the OS and programs, the other for all your files.

I hear ya about wanting a big partition, but here's why I don't do it anymore: Defragmentation.
Do you know it takes Norton Speed Disk over 24 hours to defrag a heavily fragmented 60gb partition? I can't imagine how long it would take to do a 180. Also, remember that you'll never get a true 160gb - for two reasons: Hard drive companies lie. 1 mb = 1048576 bytes HD companies 1mb = 1000000 That may not seem like a lot, but it makes a big diff when you're dealing with 160gb. Also, there's overhead as well, so you're never going to see 160gb. Cheers, Backov
