I'm not paying my doctor bills...

Seriously, I go to the sports medicine doctor with a way fucked up hurting hamstring. The doctor extends my leg and pokes around for 15 seconds and then he tells me I "tweaked it". Then he writes me a 'scrip for vicodin.

The bill for this 5 minutes? $175??? wtf?

The ER doctor charged my insurance $400 for a 5 minute visit. Doctors are never cheap.

Blame your government.

When someone gets his MD, he's usually over $100k in debt from med school. And while starting out, he'll have a shitty income. Then, he needs to get ridiculously expensive insurance because people refuse to accept that every single person in the world occasionally makes mistakes. If he does make a mistake, it can end up costing him his license, or simply blowing his insurance payments up even further.

this is all very true and if anyone ever needs surgery request the doctor does it not the medical school student.

The money you pay is for the assurance that it's temporary and can't develop into something seriously fucked up that can cause you to lose a limb. However, I agree the doctor rates are ridiculous, but the solution is not to take it out on the doctor but push your legislators into coming up with a centralized solution to replace merchant medicine with something more socially palatable..

You should be thrilled you walked away with some vicodin, usually it's $175 and you walk out empty handed

That's exactly right - I used to be pissed off at the size of doctors' bills until I put my ex-wife through med school, internship and residency. That was bad enough - if I'd actually had go through it myself - I would charge $500 for a five-minute appointment.

It's usually more than one mistake, I guess it would depend on what kind of mistake(s) they made though. If he/she makes those kind of mistakes and goes overboard enough to lose their license then they should not be a doctor. The last thing we need is a buncha doctors that are fuckups because they can make all the mistakes they want without any problems.

What ER do you go to? Hell I would often gladly pay 400 bucks to not have to wait for an hour and then spend another hour behind a curtain, then yet another hour or so to get back whatever test or something they asked for.

Actually what the hell did you go to the ER for that was fixed in 5 minutes? They can not even do sutures in 5 minutes.

LOL yeah! I only pay when I need an $8 dollar deductible or whatever to start a regular prescription. Although our tax is what, 13% in Canada on all regular purchases, and income tax ranges starting at 15% and goes as high as 29% of your entire wage. I think the Canadian healthcare system is laid out fairly well.

How does this compare in the US? What are you taxes like and do you keep a larger portion of your earnings, and if so, do you set it aside for health care?

Just a little note: the American government actually spends slightly more money on health care per capita than the Canadian one. So tax differences go to other things.

The US just really, really, REALLY sucks at getting bang for its buck when it comes to health care

The $400 was just the doctors bill for 5 minutes of his time. That was not the whole ER bill. The nurses did most of the work and it was not fixed in 5 minutes. The wait was actually 3 or 4 hours to be seen, which is normal for here. Then I waited to see the doctor for about half an hour. He then saw me for 5 minutes and let the nurses take over. I think the whole bill was over $1500, but insurance pays it. I just have a $50 co-pay.

I was there for Paxil withdrawl. Which I learned is scary and painful. Weird thing is there was another person there for the exact some thing. The ER doctor had no idea what to do so he called poison control for information.
