Side note - I predict there will be many wannabe's posting eventually if the thread takes off. Seems everyone likes to say they were in fairly early. I have no idea why really. Technically you should have a bit to show for it and if you make that up and do have a bit it would look better if you did it in a short time. All I know is there was in no way as many people around in even 99 that now claim they were.

It's easy to prove. I will call out all posers.

What was your domain in 1998-99?

I would fail more than likely then. I do not think I even own any of the same domains as I did back then. I think perhaps sinfulcontent may of been pre 99.

My FIRST first domain is from well before that, regged in 1996 to promote my then-magazine - still going strong as one of my main community hubs...wish I'd regged a lot more back then
But I've never had the heart to get rid of my first "let's make some money at this domain" - freefetishporn.com - it just has a lot of junk on it that's been there for years. I ought to put it back the way it was at first, when it was "Krystal's Free Fetish Porn" - "Krystal" had a lot of good recommendations back then, and she made some money at it - of course, very few of the sponsors exist anymore so she probably wouldn't make much money with the original site these days

I have about 200 or so active domains. I know I sold most if not all of my early domains around 2001-2002. I may and it is a big may, still have a domain or three that were indeed registered pre 99. Just would be nothing to special or it would of been sold like the others back then.
I also will admit I did a whole shit load of domain floating with network solutions. It was hard to pass up. Especially since instead of paying the 70 bucks you could just select bill me latter and use the domain for 3 plus months while they would send you stacks of letters asking for the money or they would eventually take it back. Did not seem to matter if you had hundreds of domains out and did this constantly. I then typically only kept a select few. It was pretty short sighted but oh well.

By the way mike since you brought up toms newbie booter. I really think you sent me a smoking hi8 or svhs tape back then. Was not a whole lot of people into smoking fetishes on there if I recall.

I had not turned 16 at the time. Started reading more. Got reffered to the old Netpond board, started reading and posting there, mostly on the newbie section but did get contact with Anthony amongst others who showed me AVS, SexKey was the first one I used. Voltar showed me how to build freesites and that was the start of it. I used freehosts for over 1 year, first domain I got was bustingamateurs.com in late 2000, dont own it anymore though. Earliest domain that I regged my self that I still own is weboflinks.com

I probably did - I was still trying to figure out if there was a "mainstream adult" market for smoking stuff at the time; I knew there was an active smoking fetish community, since I helped found it on usenet in the early 90s, and started publishing my magazine in 1994. I started my first smoking paysite in early 1999, but it was basically just known by the smoking fetish community. I didn't "let the cat out of the bag" as far as putting up a smoking paysite with a webmaster program until MarcDe gave me a shot with it in 2001. I think it took Brad about a month after that to put a crappy smoking site into his program, of course labelling it "The number-one rated smoking fetish site"

It was while researching billing, traffic, graphics etc. for my first smoking paysite that I ran across the rest of the adult webmaster world, and figured "this may be a great second job when I'm not working on my paysite." It turned out to be a bit of an understatement...a second job that paid six figures a year? Best second job I ever had

That would explain a lot then. If it was you and I am pretty sure it was and I very well may still even have the tape (almost positive it was an SVHS or one of the weird sizes). At the time you were very reluctant to move forward with anything.

Yep, I was very conflicted at the time - since I got some very conflicting advice from MikeAI. He gave me some of the best advice I ever got, which was to concentrate on what I knew, and not waste all my time competing with 5000 other people all trying to sell the same $35pps signup to the same Asian, ebony or teen site. But he also was strongly against taking the smoking fetish "public," saying I should keep it to myself - he was even against my taking the name MikeSmoke because it might be a hint to someone else.
I finally realized I could serve *both* masters by being the dominant force in the smoking fetish community, and running a separate smoking program with the best content, in the regular adult world. (But his overall advice was right on target; since all of my eggs weren't in the mainstream adult basket, when things started to slow down in 2003-04 or so, I was already doing fine with my smoking stuff and didn't think about hanging myself, like a lot of my friends who were doing exclusively free site/AVS/etc. lol)

I wasn't a Noob on Tom's board when it opened actually. I was helping out there, which ended up me being offerd Netpond's noob board, and then Netpond itself. Hell, I think it's great that one of the bigger Hosts in our industry is owned by a friend who I helped setup his .htaccess when he was a noob.

You just don't see the committment with noobs as you did back 10 plus years ago. But then again, it was falling out of the sky back then.

Wow that's weird that he would advise about keeping it in the *closet* but I guess things were different back the, even now, you still have a huge market share in the fetish I'm sure. I actually get my girlfriends into it now, but having quit smoking it's for me reaching out to an old demon I used to love. I bet there are a lot of people like me out there..

Haha, no. I think I only met you once in person, we didn't hang out but we chatted often on the *old* boards way before GFY even. Anyway I might be engineering a comeback.. can't break the eggs before the omelette is ready to be made

No, I know you were a little ahead of me and certainly remember your meteoric rise I just figured using your name would pinpoint the time frame for people better than using GiGi or Ironhorse

Well, he was right in a way - everyone and his bro had to come up with a smoking site after I went public, and it did have an effect, in that a lot of people were afraid of joining smoking sites because most of them were ripoffs.
That's very cool about your getting into it - I'm going to go to sleep tonight with a warm feeling, having corrupted someone else

Hell that feels like 20 years . Your start up route brings back memories of Green Guy, Hun and the dreaded dialler arguments.

Here?s Wolfshade 2000 complete with 12clicks mojosearch box ? cause of some of the finest cheater arguments.

People always joked about free hosts but don?t realise how much money was made from places like terra.es and smutserver.

Apologies to The Hun and Worldsex for cheating with blind links to feed CJ, and a big thanks to terra.es for providing months of lightning fast banner free hosting.

Congrats and shame on you at same time. Really over 400k in a account even when it says right on the receipt about FDIC and 250k? Plus really that is like throwing away money leaving it even in a standard savings account. Banks give shit interest. I can respect needed a cushion of emergency money on hand, even then a place like ING is only 2 days away and gives way better rates than most any bank.

PS the recession laugh has zero to due with bank balances either. Does not mean everyone is broke.

Yup you sure pegged me. Was not even advice, just normal common sense. You are obviously right and I am wrong. I also am a nobody and you are a purchased nick. Which really does strike of full on financial genius. So please do carry on with the rest of your morning.

The first url I actually owned was in 2000... (according To Wayback)
However I was doing stuff online BEFORE I owned a domain... So I suppose I got 'online' back in 1999...
But before that I was selling VHS mail order, from the mid 80's onwards
