A few basic questions regarding webmin
Im trying to configure my dedicated server(setting up new sites, etc.), and I was told to use webmin to configure the server, well, i've tried installing it, and just figured out you can't use it in windows or xp. Right? If so, how should I configure the server(linux)? He mentioned something about SecureCRT(SSH), which I have, can that take the place of webmin or do you use that inconjunction with webmin? Anyways, basically, is there a way to configure this server myself without webmin?

webmin goes on the server. you install it via SSH. you access it via the web. it's not super simple to configure thing but it's fairly easy once you learn it. if you don't want to do all that just get a managed hosting service.

Using SSH vs. Webmin to setup your server is more of an either/or question and either one should do the job. Like, you can use SSH to install webmin (and do many other tasks remotely) ... or you can use Webmin to install SSH (and do many other tasks remotely). One snag here though: your server will need to be up & running to do ANYTHING remotely.
Webmin should be usable from any browser. SSH needs a client installed on your Windows machine but works just like telenet. Both are secure and both can be used to setup your already running server. The main difference I see between the 2 are: Webmin is prettier to look at and a little more user freindly for those who might not be sure of what they're doing (not that you can't do some damage with it ![]() SSH just dumps you into one of these: Debian GNU/Linux comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by applicable law. Last login: Sat Oct 26 00:46:16 2002 from xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx computer_name:~# Personally, I think SSH is more flexable since it's an actual terminal, but Webmin has it's advantages in certain areas since complex tasks can be made simple... and it's pretty to look at. ![]() ![]() |

I for one did not reply to the original post as I have no experience with the package you mentioned. Armed Squirrel on the other hand is fluent in most forms of Unix Admin, but those little hands make it tough to type.
