Internet Rule #1. Never let your domain expire

I accidently let my domain expire and now GD wants $90 to reclaim it. It was an adult domain with blog/rss content but never made any $$ from it. Guess I'll regroup and start again. Forgot about the registration time since I bought it off auction. Oh well..

So keep an eye on those domains boys & girls.

I already am getting renewal notices for domains expiring in April 2009... good fucking god.. I wish the relentless marketing engine would just ease up a bit over there.

Too bad too many people are plain stupid, because it's obviously working or else they wouldn't keep doing it.

I got so sick of getting renewal letters especially 6plus months in advance every 2 weeks that I finally registered most of my domains for 10 years.

You usually have a month or so after it expires to renew unless you're with Domain Name Systems and they sell it out from under you. Even after that you get the redemption period which it *sounds* like you're.

They do send about a zillion reminder e-mails but that probably has the reverse effect in some cases - you get so many of those damn e-mails that you start to get sick of them and pay less attention to them. If they sent less reminders, they would probably have more effect.

Auto renew is a convenient option but when you have a lot of domains, renewing manually and using discount coupons can save you several dollars per domain - so auto renew isn't the best option financially!

Nah was by choice anyways. I still get plenty of renewal offers via email but at least they are all for domains that I am unsure about. Now all my main domains and ones I know I want to keep or are at least worth more than 80.00 got registered for 10 years. Plus hell it locked in the price for that time period. Worst case is I sell a domain and it comes with bonus years of free registration.

I guess only main issue could be is not keeping your shit updated and forgetting about them. Then in 10 years when they are set to renew...

I have a datebook that I manually keep all my domain info in. I have a bad habit of ignoring e-mails from the registar, but thats cause at the begining of every month I pay all my shit for that month.
When it is obvious to me that a url is a cash cow or traffic magnet, I make damn sure to be on top of that shit. There is literaly no excuse for losing one, unless you go through a shifty company.

You guys must be talking about DirectNIC about getting emails all the time. They do start sending them early and don't stop till you renew it.

Back before registeryfly.com went to shit.. they were among the worst for sending out countless reminders. I swear to god I think they sent a reminder every day soon as it hit the 30 day mark.

Hell man even up to a year after I had moved names from them, they were still sending me reminders for names I had already moved.

Yep, it's always amazing to see a big site flirt with disaster by not renewing their domain for the 10 year max.

I use a couple of registrars, at one which supports auto renew it seems they don't renew until the last day. What happens if the transaction fails, then a retry succeeds a day or two later, once the domain has expired?

Is the $90 charge just pure extortion (and profit) by the registrar or do they also have to pay an extra fee to ICANN to revive a domain that has technically expired? If it's the former then I guess the scenario I outlined above wouldn't matter...
