Money buys the time and freedom to escape the day to day thoughts of existence.
It also shows what kind of character you have. Sure, I love competition, but I am more interested in learning from others about their experience and fulfilling myself intellectually. At least, that is how I will use the money I make. To go back to school--literally and figuratively.

To some degree we all find life difficult, perplexing, and oppressive. Even when it goes well, as it may for a time, we worry that it probably won't last.
Nobody believes his or her life is perfect. >We are caught in the contradiction of finding life a rather perplexing puzzle which causes us alot of misery, and at the same time being dimly aware of the boundless, limitless nature of life. So we begin looking for an answer to the puzzle. There are many people in the world who feel that if only they had a bigger car, a nicer house, better vacations, a more understanding boss, or a more interesting partner, then their life would work. We all go through that one. But if you reach one of them, then you need another new little cookie.... a new 'if only'. "If only I had just this one last thing, then my life would be perfect!" Our whole life consists of this little subject looking outside itself for an object. But if you take something that is limited, like body and mind, and look for something outside it, that something becomes an object and must be limited too. So you have something limited looking for something limited and you just end up with more of the same folly that has made you miserable. We have all spent many years building up a conditioned view of life. There is "me" and there is this "thing" out there that is either hurting me or pleasing me. We tend to run our whole life trying to avoid all that hurts or displeases us, noticing the objects, people, or situations that we think will give us pain or pleasure, avoiding one and pursuing the other. Without exception, we all do this. We remain separate from our life, looking at it, analyzing it, judging it, seeking to answer the questions, 'What am I going to get out of it? Is it going to give me pleasure or comfort or should I run away from it?" We do this from morning until night. Underneath our nice, friendly facades there is great unease. If I were to scratch below the surface of anyone I would find fear, pain, and anxiety running amok. We all have ways to cover them up. We overeat, over-drink, overwork; we watch too much television. We are always doing something to cover up our basic existential anxiety. Some people live that way until the day they die. As the years go by, it gets worse and worse. What might not look so bad when you are twenty-five looks awful by the time you are fifty. We all know people who might as well be dead; they have so contracted into their limited viewpoints that it is as painful for those around them as it is for themselves. The flexibility and joy and flow of life are gone. All your life you have been going forward after something, pursuing some goal. We all know the picture of the important executive working until ten o'clock at night, answering the phone, grabbing a sandwich on the run. His poor body is being short changed. He thinks his frantic efforts are essential for "the good life"; he fails to see that desire is running his life. We are controlled by our desires, and have only a dim awareness of the basic truth of our existence. Caught up in desires: to be important, to possess this or that, to be rich, famous. But we begin to suspect that our life is not working quite the way the TV commercials say it will. TV suggests that if you have the newest hair spray and makeup and garage door opener, your life is going to be great. Right? The selfish greed which runs your life will not work.

My goal in life is to live... and to travel.
There's been enough death in my life for me to realize that life is not about "things" but experiences and trying to be content with who I am as a person. I go to shopping centres when I have to but there's not much there aside from the odd bit of computer gear, music, books and movies that I want. My real love is travel. But its more than a love, it's a passion. I hate hotels because you never meet people and big hotels tend to be the same all over the world. I like backpacking and staying in youth hostels. I travel on my own because I like to meet people from all over the world and travel with them and talk and drink and smoke hash. I love learning about other cultures and being exposed to their art, history and architecture. I find every time I go overseas I find that human beings have more things in common than we have things that divide us. And travelling like this (in most places in the world) only costs me about US$500 a week. I leave on my next trip on November 25 for seven weeks and I can't fucking wait. I fly into Amsterdam where I will chill out for a few days before heading by train into Eastern Europe through Germany. I'll be back in Amsterdam for New Years Eve before flying out to New York and then Las Vegas before returning home to Australia on January 16. One way, circumnavigating the globe. So, aside from owing my own house, which I already do, if I could have a guaranteed US$1000 a week that would be enough income for me. I'd never stop travelling. Greek Island Of Santorini, October 1998. Eleven people, six nationalities. (I'm back row second from the left) |

seriously quiet... best advice I could give ya, (because you know me.... I'm not gonna spew out some random number here), if you have kids or plan on having kids, you may want to keep it running for them to take over... could be a nice thing for them.
Or, if you have or plan on having kids, and don't want them involved in this biz, or don't have any and don't plan on having any and don't care about the biz one way or the other.... then just bail out man..... take off and go do something you want to do. It doesn't need to be the ulcer causing, hair falling out event that most make it out to be.... hell, I've done it before with less than fifty bucks to my name.... I hardly think you're going to go hungry any time soon. why all this worry?

so, I'll answer your question then..... Quote:
then I guess it would depend on how old you are, because that's gonna affect how many 'retirement' years you can sort of count on, when balanced with the duration of your life expectancy. Are you retiring at 25 and gonna live to be 87? Or are you retiring at 50 and only going to live another 6 months? Makes a big difference in how much cash you're gonna need. so.... actually..... I really can't answer this question.... sorry.... I tried.

Your poisoned seeds Find yourself elected to a different kind of creed I believe that love alone might do these things for you I believe that love alone might do these things for you I believe in the power of creation I believe in the good vibration I believe in love alone yea yea Won't somebody tell me what we're coming to It might take forever till we watch those dreams come true All the money in the world won't buy you peace of mind You can have it all but you still won't be satisfied Money can't buy it...baby Sex can't buy it...baby Drugs can't buy it...baby You can't buy it...baby Now... Hear this Pay attention to me 'Cause I'm a rich white girl and it's plain to see I got every kind of thing that the money can buy Let me tell you all about it Let me amplify I got DIAMONDS You heard about those I got so many that I can't close my safe at night in the dark Lying awake in a sick dream I believe that love alone might do these things for you I believe that love alone might do these things for you I believe in the power of creation I believe in the good vibration I believe in love alone yea yea |

I ran into something similar a few years ago. I had made a fairly large amount of $$ (for me) and was looking for something more. My solution was to make a list of 10 things I wanted to do and then just kept doing them. 5 were pretty much filler and may never get done and I did 4 of them. Time for a new list after reading this thread.
My point is you can reorder your priorites without doing the whole retirement thing. Then when you get bored as hell you still have something to work on. |

To retire? I'd say 2 million would do it. Earning 5%, maybe 10% living off of that and slowly drawing from the principle over time.

Interesting thread.
quiet - I noticed you never answered your own question. For me, if I had to pick an exact $ amount... $10 million. Yes, I could probably retire and be happy with half of that, and yes, I'm sure I could spend double that too. But I think that's the amount that answers the question for me.
