:mad Car Insurance

I love insurance companies. At the weekend I went looking for a new car, around dealers, and a few took my fancy.

BUT... just today I got some quotes from CIS, I nearly shit my pants.

What the fuck is their problem?
Had the license for 1 year and a few months, 19 year old driver, car is kept in a locked garage overnight, no previous accidents or bumps so 1 year no claims discount, doing less than 12,000 miles per year.

First thing I saw, beautiful car...

2002 Mercedes SLK230 Roadster, 2DR
Insurance quote... just under £16,000! ( ~ $25,600 USA )

so, going down the market,

2002 Mazda MX-5 1.8i, 2DR
Insurance quote... £7000 ( ~ $11,200 USA )

so, going further down the market,

2002 Fiat Stilo 1.2 3DR
Insurance quote... £2500 ( ~ $4,000 USA )

I put in my father's details for the SLK. 36 years driving experience, no accidents or previous claims, quote came back as £492. My mother. Driving since 1976, no previous accidents or claims, £890. Unbelievable.

The first two cars, I couldn't even get the quotes online for myself 'cause it requires an "underwriter" to give a custom quote, due to my age. Or something like that. I'm sick of these small fucking cars but the insurance on larger cars is pathetic. You know, if teenage punks in XR3i's didn't all drive like complete assclowns, then there'd be less of a problem and we'd all be better off.

Are these rates even normal?
Are there any good places to get car insurance that don't charge stupid rates?

Your 19 and you've only had a license for a year.. thats normal. I'm 19 and had a license for 4 years, makes no difference. Rates dont start going down until you are 23 or 24. You can also get student discounts if you are a college student with decent grades. Also taking drivers ed can you get a discount.

Slightly different in the UK, I believe. Minimum age to start driving lessons is 17, so I had the first one on my 17th birthday (was a present)... I know of the "pass plus" scheme which adds 1 year NCB, but that is about all we have available. Was told by the person I spoke to at CIS, 25 is when the rates will start to drop significantly, providing I have an existing NCB of more than 1 year.

Never heard of the good grade thing.
I wonder if we have that over here?
Should be easy enough.

There must be other ways to lower this bitch...

That's VERY expensive.

I thought I had it bad:

I am 18 years old and have had my license since March 2001. No tickets, no points, no nothing.

I'm buying a black 1999 3000GT and and the insurance quote with collission is $5500.

Thus:

1. Young, "inexperienced" driver
2. High-speed sports car
3. BLACK

I thought I was in the worst tier but $20,000 to insure a car? Just drive it uninsured man ---- or just get liability.

Yeah I was gonna do that but then you will just have to pay the same one year later as you still won't have any no claims bonus

may as well pay a lot for your first year and get a good surprise next year!
