Having a program only show in the system tray

Is there anyway to have a program only have it's icon show in the system tray rather than cluttering the taskbar?

I know winamp lets you do this but it has a built-in option for it.

tsr's (terminate and stay resident) portions of programs load there to remain able to intercept calls to associated types of files. Or something along those lines, i don't think it's possible to stuff a whole program over there

I know some programs that can do that innately but i haven't heard of a program that can force another program into that state

It has to be specially coded, afaik there's no program that will do it auto, since it involves killing the programs window and having the program reopen it when you do whatever in the tray to reactivate it.

Cheers,

You can easily add shortcuts on your other side of the taskbar, over by the Start button.

I do have shortcuts there.

There are some programs that I almost always have open such as the ATI TV and the Creative Sound Mixer. The take up space on the task bar but I would rather have their icon just show up in the system tray thus leaving free room on the task bar.

Take a look at the post right above your last one - I posted a link to the program you're looking for.

You posted a link to an ActiveX control to streamline adding that capability for programmers.

Cheers,
