Don't use hot water.......if any of it hits the glass, it will shatter.
If you don't have any weather tools handy, CAREFULLY use a butter knife along the door and chip away at the ice. I've even used a car key to chip it away once. |

I'd use the blowdryer before I started chiseling away at the paint on the car.

And if you use water it doesn't have to be that hot.

I just use normal lukewarm tap water. It is still 50 degrees above the temp of the ice, no need for 100 degree water. Done it a ton of times, even on a car with a chipped windshield and no shattering.

Happens to my car all the time. I have to park on a street because I'm in the city so I can't use extension cords. I usually chip away with a screwdriver and keep pulling. Eventually it'll open.
