Northern peeps: Frozen car door

Ice rain last night .. and today my car doors are completely frozen over .. what's worst is I don't have a scraper or broom .. any remedies ..

will hot water do the trick ?

Don't use hot water.......if any of it hits the glass, it will shatter.

If you don't have any weather tools handy, CAREFULLY use a butter knife along the door and chip away at the ice. I've even used a car key to chip it away once.

Deej 12-10-2008 12:33 PM

extension cord and blow dryer

IllTestYourGirls 12-10-2008 12:34 PM

bump into your door to see if you can shake the ice loose. then open them and slam them.

Agent 488 12-10-2008 12:35 PM

i had to use a car key last year. heated it up with a lighter.

Ross 12-10-2008 12:35 PM

De-icer works a treat!

Fresh 12-10-2008 12:36 PM

Assuming you've tried all other doors first - I'd go for the blow dryer too.
The other thing is pouring windshield wiper fluid (with anti-freeze) around the corners of your door. Should 'soften up' the ice enough to open the door.

iMind 12-10-2008 12:42 PM

I've always used hot water with no problem

Hell, used to clean my windshield off with a pot of hot water EVERY morning before leaving for work, fuck scraping.

vidvicious 12-10-2008 12:43 PM

LOLtryed bumpin it .. Tryed the key .. broke the ice along the seam .. seems to be stuck around the rubber ..

When I pull on the handle it doesn't budge .. Can't get an extention out to the car I'm at the far end of the lot ...

vidvicious 12-10-2008 12:45 PM

One way or another looks like I'm cabbin it today! .. i gotta get to the store to buy anti frezze, de icer, broom ..etc

Grr! at least my winter tires are on .. I know some peeps that are stuck cus of no winter tires

stickyfingerz 12-10-2008 12:45 PM

extension cord plus hair dryer. Or portable space heater.

abadfish 12-10-2008 12:59 PM

I'd use the blowdryer before I started chiseling away at the paint on the car. :)

abadfish 12-10-2008 01:02 PM

And if you use water it doesn't have to be that hot.

IllTestYourGirls 12-10-2008 01:03 PM

Well wait to you realize once you get it open you cant close it because internally the latch is frozen as well :( lol. That has happened to me before it SUCKS!

scuba steve 12-10-2008 01:05 PM

if all that fails, the next logical step is to move to warmer climate:thumbsup

thats what i did when it happened to me

:thumbsup:1orglaugh

I just use normal lukewarm tap water. It is still 50 degrees above the temp of the ice, no need for 100 degree water. Done it a ton of times, even on a car with a chipped windshield and no shattering.

notime 12-10-2008 01:26 PM

de-ice spray. Always in my car and in my house too in case the door won't open.
Had the same thing last year.

You could try having the car shipped down to Florida. The ice should melt off pretty fast once you get it there. :winkwink:

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh for some reason I found this hilarious.

Happens to my car all the time. I have to park on a street because I'm in the city so I can't use extension cords. I usually chip away with a screwdriver and keep pulling. Eventually it'll open.

Is your car a Chevy?

JakeR 12-10-2008 08:56 PM

back in college we were leaving a bar and a friends door was frozen, so he pissed all over it. didnt work.
