Chris Mathews says its his JOB to make Obama a success

So much for journalism looks like it really is all propaganda. I hope Obama IS a success not "made" one by illusion.

Mathews is simply proof that people like DRAMA and controversy.. he exudes it from his pores.

During the dem primary he said that if you had a grocery list of items for government to get done, then Hillary is your girl. If you have civil rights issues and want to see them focussed on again, then Obama is your boy. Sheeeeeeeeeesh, and that was just freudian off the cuff Mathews at his" finest".

The way I understand it, and it could just be me, that maybe Chris isn't going to push buttons just to make this President look bad.... maybe he is going to be a RESPONSIBLE journalist? That would sure be a switch. lol

We rely media for our information and we only get what they want us to know...... good or bad, that's what we know and how we know it. So it kind of IS their job to be responsible and not make things worse for him or anyone else? lol |

It is not news that most of the media is just an extension of the DNC. I think it is refreshing for Mathews to actually come out and admit it.

The media was so scared of looking "liberal," that it didn't question Bush/Cheney's obvious lies in the run-up to the Iraq War. Now look. Imagine if some of them had had the balls to ask tough questions? Might've made a difference.

Chris Matthews is a commentator, not a journalist.

FWIW, he's pretty tough on everyone. He didn't cut Clinton an ounce of slack during the Lewinski scandal. If Brian Williams or Tom Brokaw or Bob Scheiffer or Katie Couric said something like this, it would be worth mentioning.

I think you'll see once Obama begins to prove himself that some of the media will start to lean a bit to the right, as typically happens to keep people in office on their toes.

</sarcasm> Even if the media were in the tank for Democrats (which is something I strongly disagree with....the media is just who right wingers like to blame whenever they lose, because it couldn't possibly be that a majority of Americans just disagree with their policies....but I digress)..... I'll start over here. Even if the media were in the tank for Democrats, they obviously have very little influence on public opinion, considering Republican success in elections going back to 1980...and how much further to the right the party has gone in that time.

It s true that talk radio is mostly dominated by the right just like network and print media is mostly dominated by the left. Most talk radio pundits do not hold themselves out to be "objective" journalists however.

Chris Mathews used to be a journalist. I don't think too many people think of him that way anymore. He is now just a cheap propagandist spitting out thinly disguised Obama campaign/administration talking points and calling it "news". His most recent comments only acknowledge what everyone already knows to be true.

So during the past few years that meant he was mostly busting Republican chops. He was a political operative, then he was a print journalist, now he is a cable news commentator. (He has even said so on the air, and referred to people like Brian Williams as "straight news guys" as opposed to himself, whom he refers to as a commentator) The people who say he tries to pass himself off as a journalist while the right wing radio hosts don't aren't being honest. You have a right to your own opinions and your own views, you don't have a right to your own facts. Calling everyone you don't agree with a pseudo-journalist with an agenda, and everyone you do agree with "fair and balanced" is pretty ridiculous IMO...and basically it means to me you see the world through your own rose colored glasses and are incapable of objective thought....and therefore I really don't need to waste my time listening to anything you say. I totally understand that people have different worldviews and ideologies, but to filter everything that happens through that ideology and assign them good and bad labels based solely on whether or not you think they agree with you is insane.

who are you referring too? lol I hope you don't assume I'm a republican? What is ridiculous is people who accept the fact that many people in the mainstream media are mouth pieces for either major parties. They rationalize this by telling themselves that the other side does it too so it's fine, or that it is our turn now. Facts are being twisted all the time, or simply omitted, what you want is them objectively go after the truth and you wont have that with a guy that says his job is to make Obama's presidency a success. |

Chris Matthews was a speechwriter for Jimmy Carter. Then he worked for a newspaper in San Fran. Then he became what he is now - a commentator. He doesn't deliver the news like Brian Williams. He is from a moralistic Irish-Catholic background, so he hopped all over Bill Clinton for his supposed moral shortcomings and he voted for Bush. But he was against the Iraq War and I think it's pretty obvious he voted for Obama. He's all over the political map. He is like a political savante - he doesn't have much of a filter. Here is a longer vid: https://youtube.com/watch?v=n6pq_...eature=related

Yes he is saying he is rooting for Obama, but let's not confuse Chris Matthews with a guy responsible for delivering the news to you like Brian Williams. Matthews is a commentator, a guy that does opinion journalism. He doesn't pretend otherwise. |

Also, I think what he was saying was that as journalists, opinionated or otherwise, they shouldn't make "distractions" into big news stories and that they should focus on debating issues rather than turn their attention to sensationalistic, unimportant bullshit.

Really? That's how you interpret that? That's how you make a presidency a success? If Obama was to make bad decisions on important issues, you don't think that that would have a much bigger impact on his presidency? After hearing this clip, what do you expect Matthews to do in those situations? Call him out or just agree with him and act as a mouthpiece, a cheerleader ?

He should definitely call him out on important issues. But the fact that Rahm Emmanuel was interviewed on the street or is a huge liberal isn't an "important issue" to make a big deal out of. Making the wrong decisions like going to war in Iraq - that's something that should be called out for sure.
