Canon GL2 or Sony DCRVX2000???

I'm looking at video cameras and I'm inclined to go with either the Canon GL2 or the Sony DCRVX2000. Right now I'm leaning toward the Canon.

I've looked at both and they both seem pretty good. Mostly I'd be doing outdoors stuff (wildlife etc.) but I'd probably end up doing some indoor work as well. The camera shop guy says that the Canon is probably a better camera.

I know they are both good cameras but I'd like some input from people that have actually used them.

I think the guy at your camera shop is probably on crack.
The vx2000 is much better then the GL2, as a matter of fact they really aren't in the same class. A more apt comparison would be between the vx2000 and the canon XL1S (the next model up from the gl2). In that case there is at least comprable features.
In your case you should definately do the vx2000.

Great timing on this topic. I just bought a new VX2000 this afternoon. The guy in your video store is most likely getting a higher commission to sell you the Canon. There is no comparison. As was stated before, the XL1s is a better comparison but at about a grand more....I can not personally see the value in it.

I spent 3 grand on the camera, zoom mic, pro wide angle lens, big ass battery, aluminum case, 20 watt light, Mounting bracket for the light, 10 MiniDv tapes......

Buy the Sony...You will be happier.

I bought an XL1S last week. Picked it up for about the equivalent of $3k. That's just the standard kit though - 16x lens, color viewfinder, body, battery, charger, strap, cables etc.

Took it out to test low light conditions tonight at a fireworks display - results were excellent. It has a 'spotlight' feature so that concentrated light areas in darkness don't just end up like a bright blob - the definition is really something else. Plus the optical stabilizing lens is very smooth indeed.

Once my new motherboard + processor for my NLE system arrive this week I could capture some if you wanted to get a vague idea.

I think once you're comparing cameras at this end of the 'consumer' market, it becomes very subjective. Personally I like the plethora of manual overrides the Canon lets me use, and of course, not forgetting that whole "It looks like a TV camera" thing, with the great big square lens hood that comes with it. The amount of people tonight jumping in front of it pulling stupid faces and saying "What channel's it going to be on?". Dickheads. Still, it seems to give you people's 'respect' to a degree, you tend to be able to push through crowds and look official with it....

But I guess you wouldn't be using it for that kinda scenario

RedShoe,

Does your crew shoot in interlaced or progressive mode?

Cheers,

Thanks for the input. I guess I'll take another look at the Sony.

3K?? Aaron, you is one crazy mofo.

Do you realize you could fly to china (economy) stay a few days and pick a Sony VX2000, fly back and still get all that for under 3K?

A friend of ours just got back from China and said they were dirt cheap over there.

And for what he paid in air fare I'd be cheaper for us to go there and get it ourselves.

the DCRVX2000 for sure - even though i paid a fuckload for it.. it's worth it.. definately better than the GL2. if you could get a good condition second hand XL1 it would be a different situation though. Matrix uses the sony btw.

We use GL2's and are very happy with them. Check the framerate on progressive mode on the sony. Also take into consideration the lens, ask a few people that have been doing it for a long time who makes a better lens. They are both great cameras and you are probably a sure bet with either. They both have there ups and downs , but both will give you amazing quality video. Go into a store near you and hold both of em, pick the one you feel most comfortable with.

Great idea...Or better yet...Ask the pro style content companies what they shoot with. Matrix content for example.
