ON DVD AND BLU-RAY™ HI-DEF

FROM UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOME ENTERTAINMENT

OCTOBER 21, 2008

OVERVIEW:

Lock the doors. Ignore the knocking. Don’t let them in…no matter what. Inspired by true events, this heart pounding, nail-biting frightener mercilessly explores our most universal fears, where simply opening the door to a stranger leads to a grueling night of terror one could never imagine. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star in this relentless suspense thriller that will keep you up at night and make you never want to answer the door again!

SYNOPSIS:

The horrifying events that took place in the Hoyt family’s vacation home 1801 Clark Road on February 11, 2005 are still not entirely known. Champagne. Rose Petals. Candlelight. It was supposed to be a night of celebration for Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) and James Hoyt (Scott Speedman). But after leaving a friend’s wedding and returning to the house, everything had collapsed for the happy couple. Then came a 4 a.m. knock on the door and a haunting voice. “Is Tamara here?” Writer/director Bryan Bertino explores our most universal fears in The Strangers, a terrifying suspense thriller about a couple whose remote getaway becomes a place of terror when masked strangers invade. The confrontation forces Kristen and James to go far beyond what they thought themselves capable of if they hope to survive. The Strangers comes to DVD October 21st!

BONUS FEATURES: The following bonus features appear on the DVD and Blu-rayTM :

* DELETED SCENES
* THE ELEMENTS OF TERROR - A look at the production process of The Strangers. The influence of locations, sets and sounds to create fear are discussed by the crew, with anecdotes from Liv Tyler about the physical challenges of being terrorized.

Hrm at the risk of providing spoilers...

Bad/unbelievable acting. It's so frustrating in horror movies when the characters do the stupidest things, like split up and leave each other alone, don't stand up for themselves, don't try to escape, don't fight back, etc... CB radio in the barn? Come on.

Predictability. I knew the second his buddy walked in the house that he'd shoot him accidently... I mean he could have waited the extra second to verify who he was shooting at.

The general theme of the house being under siege, when all they have are minimum strength locks and big unprotected windows... They kept locking doors and pushing shelves in front of them while backing up against a big sliding glass patio window. Too unbelieveable for me.

I guess my biggest problem with the movie was also the point of it. I don't like a villain who has no motive, and the villains in this movie were out to commit a random murder on people they didn't know, ie. "The Strangers". I can't take a killer with no connection to the victim and no real passion to kill seriously I guess.

I read that THE STRANGERS was a remake of sorts of FUNNY GAMES. Most reviews I read said that FUNNY GAMES was far more intense, and as a result, a much better movie than THE STRANGERS.

So, I rented FUNNY GAMES. I liked the disturbing nature of the flick, but I didn't really find it that intense or shocking. Perhaps my years of horror flicks have left me jaded. All in all, I was expecting much more out of FUNNY GAMES, so if the common consensus is that THE STRANGERS isn't as good as FUNNY GAMES, I have a feeling I'll be disappointed. I rarely turn down watching a movie (any genre), so I'll probably end up seeing THE STRANGERS soon anyway... Hopefully, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Couldn't agree more.

Dead on! Even if his friend was the killer. Waiting a half a second to VERIFY it wasn't someone trying to help, or a friend, or a kitten, would have worked for me. However, I just took it as his friend was secretly having an affair with the main guys mom, and so in a fit of rage shoots his frends face off and plays it off like he didn't know it was his friend. (That's all subtext of course)

I can suspend that reality for a little while, but not for a full movie and certainly not long enough to think that these killers are VERY fast movers and can apparently see thru walls, and are highly intelligent. It always makes me laugh to think... where are they when the smaller girl or someone else is doing the terrorizing?

For example, doe the guy stranger say like, "ok, little girl, you go knock on the door, me and this big bich are gonna just sit over here in the bushes" and then later he must be ike, ok, big bitch go in the house, I'm gonna go over here and hide behind the tree..." How does he know when he should just stand all creepy in the yard? And when the victims see him, and they shut the blinds, or door or whatever, does he high-tail it to a new creepy location, or does he just walk? Does he take his mask off so it's easier to see? C'mon.. I want answers.

You know what I'd like.. I'd like to see that ENTIRE film, from all 3 points of view of the killers. I'd buy that for a dollar!

Funny Games was a remake of Funny Games. The same guy that directed in in I dunno Austria or wherever remade it for America... Dude... It's damn near the same movie almost shot for shot. He even used VERY similar locations. Like.. Incredibly similar. Go look up youtube and watch the foreign trailer to funny games you'll see some of the EXACT same shots in the foreign trailer that were in the american version.

Oh.. and you won't be pleasently suprised. You'll be like... "Eh, I could take it or leave it."

The Strangers is actually pretty bad.

It's inspired by true events. Almost any movie can say that, though.

Most movies that say something similar to based on a true story, or inspired by true events, do usually stretch it.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre played off the "true story" thing, too. The only thing "true" about it was that Leatherface was based on Wisconsin killer Ed Gein.

As another poster said, most movies have some sort of real-life inspiration, and could therefore claim to be based on true events. Does that make the movie any less credible or scary? Fuck no.

And if you want a movie based on the killings done by Charles Manson's "Family," (Charlie never actually killed anyone himself, btw), check out The Manson Family. Very intense film.
