the only word McCain and Palin use as much as 'maverick' is 'Petraeus' - every time McCain says it i think of Jan Brady and 'Marcia Marcia Marcia' - 'Petraeus Petraeus Petraeus!"

Am I the only one who thinks Petraeus' name sounds like Betray-Us? I laugh every time I hear it in speeches, would you want to be led by general Betray-Us?

How strange, i didnt see anywhere in the article where Petraeus said negotiate. However Mark Carleton-Smith did.

I found it funny when Bush was constantly using Petraeus' name over and over....he and McCain both talking about how we should listen to him.

I thought we lived in a country where Presidents give orders to generals, not the other way around.

That was the headline when I posted the link. It wouldn't be the first time yahoo changed one.

The end result is the same....he wants to sit down and talk with Taliban leaders.....quite possibly without "preconditions" of all things.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus said on Wednesday that negotiations with some members of the Taliban could provide a way to reduce violence in sections of Afghanistan gripped by an intensifying insurgency.
Quote:
Petraeus said negotiations with insurgents willing to consider reconciliation could reduce violence by isolating hard-core militants, which is what occurred in Iraq's Anbar province when Sunni tribesmen joined U.S. forces against al Qaeda.
Umm...? Or were you looking at a different article?

This seems about as clear as day:

"If there are people who are willing to reconcile (with the government), then that would be a positive step in some of these areas that have actually been spiraling downward," said Petraeus, who will soon take up responsibility for U.S. operations in Afghanistan.

But, of course, he didn't use the word "precondition", so it's totally different.

Did you read the first paragraph?

"U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus said on Wednesday that negotiations with some members of the Taliban could provide a way to reduce violence in sections of Afghanistan gripped by an intensifying insurgency. "

I think Obama summed it up best himself. After McCain gave his 4th grader's explanation of Obama's tax plan, Obama said:

"The straight talk express lost a wheel on that one."

The British Government negotiated a peace with the IRA, a terrorist organisation supported by many Americans, and the troubles ended. So why not try to end the problems?

Yes the Taliban will ask for the world, like the IRA did, and they will settle for what they can get. Like the IRA did. The people who supported the IRA saw the truth and wanted peace, they abandoned the IRA and left with no alternative the IRA had to cede many points. Some of the top IRA men and now in Government in Northern Ireland, even though they deny being in the IRA.

Talking around a table is the best way to stop a war. It stopped the war in Vietnam, Korea and others. Talking to the enemy is not a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength.

I believe I heard somewhere that the Taliban were cutting ties with al Queda or were thinking about it or some shit.

I mean, seems pretty smart to me to talk with them if it's true.

This is the only thing being discussed in this thread:

I might be taking it for granted, as English is my first language, but what was said, and was was shown seems pretty dead-on.

Yeah i read the article, reuters has a better in depth article on this very issue that clearly states as well as it being US policy that they would have to reconciliation with the Afghanistan goverment before we ever sat down at the table.

This is the same foreign policy thats been on the news for 6 years, nothing new here. Its the same tactic we used with the The Afghan Northern Alliance, or United Islamic Front for the Salvation of Afghanistan and it worked out like a charm.

Same plan, same tactic...reconciliation with the Afghanistan goverment first.

Or find another older, irrelevant "more in depth" article where Petraeus didn't actually say "negotiate".
