clonebox - has anyone used them?

Hey GFY,

I was just looking at www DOT bettercgi DOT com/clonebox/

"Clonebox is a live spare server, identical to your main server, which fills two roles. First, it stands by ready to automatically take over should your main server be unavailable for any reason. In case of a hardware failure, network outage, a hacker taking down the server, etc. the Clonebox will detect that and start serving up the sites, so your members never know there was ever a problem."

I wanted to know if anyone has ever used it or got some feedback on their service?

Thanks

Tim

oh it is I know

either you setup a round robin or load balanced server all over the world OR you stick with a good host and one that makes backups and is able to set it back in no time in the event of a HD crash

We do backup everything here as well but taking a 2nd car with you while you go for a ride in case the first breaks down isnt the best solution imho

I'm trying to figure out how it works and how they can offer it for $24/mo (or whatever it was). Is it a pool of general standby servers that have an image loaded in when your main server dies, or is it truly dedicated to you?

Guys,

That's Ray/BetterCGI. If anybody thinks they can do it with minimal issues, he's the one I'd trust.

He's also a programmer, not a Dreamweaver guy.

This is the same guys that do Strongbox.

Ray knows his shit!

He may not be a good website designer but he is a great programmer and I don't pick my vendors based on warm fuzzy designs.

Having a mirror server is an important part of a web biz. Like it was said shit can happen to any host including being shut down or going out of biz.

A mirror server off site for this price is a deal. And knowing that its coming from Ray is a no brainer.

Indeed it's a copy of your drive which isn't booted until it's needed - either
because your site is down or you boot it through your control panel.
That's part of how we keep the price so very low - we need only enough
processors to run any clones which are needed at the moment.

I was a little hesitant to even answer this question because I mentioned Clonebox
once about six months ago, then yesterday I accidently said "Clonebox"
when someone asked about Throttlebox and kandah's been in that thread
and this one saying "that shit has been spammed here alot lately."
So in six months I've mentioned it twice. Jeez, Kandah, I didn't know
answering a question about our stuff a few times per year qualified as
"been spammed here alot lately". I suppose it's just the political season -
everybody is going around inventing ridiculous accusations about everybody else.

The site sure isn't pretty yet. We're waiting for our site designer to get
back to us. We had people asking what we could do for them in this area,
so we figured we'd post some information for now. As Gigolo said, I'm a
mad scientist tech guy, definitely not a Dreamweaver artist, so we just
got the info up there for now while the graphics guy does his thing to make
it pretty.

You weren't aware of the recent issue with theplanet? Quality host, quality network... big downtime. It's not just the individual server parts you need to think about when preparing a disaster plan, there could be a massive event that affects a huge number of customers for hours or even days. The only true reliable backup (whether live or otherwise) is off network and off site.

I wasn't talking about customer support (which I agree theplanet is lacking in - I left them for exactly that reason). My "what if" scenario was a devastating event which would affect multiple customers, and it would take some time to recover and restore services. Physical damage to infrastructure. You think the hosts you mentioned above would never have a fire, or be damaged by earthquake? It doesn't matter how "good" they are when they're affected by circumstances beyond their control.
