:mad Spammers reach an all time low.

I'm sure you guys have been getting those popup windows that look like a Windows prompt, but they're not.

Ever since the mention of the new software that does this, on the boards lately, I've been getting almost a dozen of these things a day.

I'm not even going to mention the name of this program, but it can spam a whole block of IP's, easily.

The posts talking about it did nothing, except drawing spammers attentions to it.

dude, he's right, the program isn't new. messanger (not msn messanger) is a feature of windows and this program just exploits that feature. just disable/uninstall it.

Its on Microsoft's site. But Here's a short to the point procedure courtesy of the GFY User named "Media"

DISABLE WINDOWS MESSENGER (not msn messenger)

Windows XP
1. Click on the Start button and open the control panel.
2. Open the Performance and Maintenance control panel and go to Administrative Tools.
3. Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.
4. Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.
5. Change the startup type to Disable and click Apply at the bottom.
6. Click OK to exit window.

Windows 2000
1. Click on the Start button -> Settings -> Control Panel.
2. Double click on Administrative Tools.
3. Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.
4. Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.
5. Change the startup type to Disable and click Apply at the bottom.
6. Click OK to exit window.

I'd love to be able to murder a few fuckin' spammers. I've disabled everything I can, and I've tried to hide from them and they don't leave me alone. Bleh! Free beer to whoever brings me a spammers head. (Granted you bring me the head before the husband drinks all the beer.)

I havn't seen it, yet then again, I don't use windows except to play a few games (which happens after I physically unplug my network connection)
It's a standard windows being over-permissive to make it easier for MCSE (must call someone experienced) clowns
to get fancy features working on their network. It's on by default,
many don't know how to turn it off, so it's an ideal spam mechanism.

No different than javascript popup windows to those poor suckers
that still use IE really. When your computer opens windows you
didn't ask it to, it's time to figure out what is fucked up with
your computer.

Well, Pandora's Box has already been opened, so I'll just call it for what it is - DirectAdvertiser.

That article I pointed out, a few posts ago, says,

'Many network administrators are puzzled over how the ads have weaseled through firewalls onto users' computers. While Windows Messenger traditionally uses commonly protected ports 137 and 139, Flynn said the recent pop-ups appear to use port 135, which is often left unprotected by a firewall because it's a vital conduit for communicating with a Microsoft service called RPC.'

The article also mentions that spammers like it because spamming laws do not apply to it (like spammers are so concerned about the law).
