VBulletin or PHPBB?

I'd like to start a small forum which has nothing to do with adult but it's going to be about my aviation related hobbies.

Searching the web and reading techie's forums it looks like that everybody says: " go with VBulletin if you can spend the money "

$ 180.00 for VBulletin is not a big deal and i won't mind to pay it.

Beside the fee which gives you updates, support via email, etc, is Vbulletin developed better than PHPBB?

What do you suggest?

phpbb is a strainer for security, go with vbulletin. The headaches it'll save you later is well worth it.

Never had a PHPbb board hacked. Only problem is postbots, but there are hacks to get rid of those. Phbbb3 works really smooth.

But
For the best SEO and security, VB will be best no matter what.
ITs just a little to bloated for my taste

Actually I'd recommend punBB which is a lightweight and secure phpBB look-alike.

You have a annual payment with VB.
Quote:
nominal fee of $60 (or $40 if purchased within 60 days of the license expiring) is payable to obtain updates for an additional year.
PhpBB is free.

Your choice.

SMF > PHPBB, but VBulletin > *

SMF is your best free solution by far. It has been around a long time.
YaBB was around in the late 90s had a branch off that became YaBB PHP and that became Simple Machines after awhile.

I've used phpBB.... great if your small, but soon as you get popular, you'll start seeing the problems. Sometimes a paid solution is better because not everyone can afford it and it's more exclusive, security through obscurity and all that.

Good luck

Hit me up on on icq, i have a vb license that i no longer use you can have cheap.

How ever it is only a leased one, it expires some time next year.
It will save wasting money on a full license if you decided you dont like it

Try PHPBB ORION,it is modified phpbb2 with included security script CBACK which prevent any kind of hack attack.Plus it have some mods included already which make it nice combo. But i stopped using them beacuse they banned me on offical support forum beacuse i accidently puted one of my porn site into my forum profile.

vBulletin is an excellent choice, but there are some complaints that it's lagging in innovation.

Vbulletin 4.0 likely won't be ready until 2010 from what I've read; sounds about right based on my past experiences with vBulletin release cycles.

If you simply plan to run a forum with minimal customization and few add-ons, then vBulletin is the way to go. Quality, proven product with great support.

However, if you're seeking cutting edge / plan to do much customizing (not talking graphics per se, but actual code changes / utilizing numerous add-ons), then take a look at Invision Power Board.

http://www.invisionpower.com/community/board/index.html

Their licensing is a bit different than vBulletin, but the overall cost comes about the same as vBulletin. $175 verses $180 last I checked.

Ron
