Performing well [answering the moderator's questions coherently] tonight will save Palin from becoming a national laughingstock. I don't think Palin is stupid, just grossly unprepared. She's a local person with seemingly with no experience or interest in national and international issues until having been selected as McCain's running mate. It's almost surreal that McCain chose her as his VP when there were other options (male and female).

I dunno..I think expectations are so low that she cannot possibly do any worse than she already has...or maybe she can..she never ceases to surprise me. The thing about Palin is that she can improvise and connect/sympathize with audiences. Debates are not about knowing the issues, they're about how you would handle them. Im sure she's gonna try to speak about personal experiences, throw in a few zingers and anecdotes (which she's very good at) and fill up the 90-120 seconds with ambiguity, hometown stories, maybe lies, and bash the Dems in the process. That should be easy for her to do..

It's gonna be interesting. But I think people are underestimating her, at least in this kind of format, and that's something you never ever do on any stage, whether it be athletic, political, social or any other.

Once again, I think people that think elections are all about issues are out of touch with the sad reality. You've got racial, gender, demographic and social undertones along with the real issues in this election. Where people put them on a list of priorities is something that remains to be seen. And leaving this up to the average 'Joe Six Pack' as someone said with sub-body temperature IQ makes things even more unclear..

In my view, her answers were just as bad as in some recent TV interviews, and yet she won the election anyways.

At the moment Obama definitely has a big edge in polls ... but toss in some terror alerts, war mongering, vote fixing, etc and McCain wins. Those who doubt that only need to look at how Bush won again in 2004. Point is the debate will be interesting to watch, but likely, no matter how poorly Palin does, not matter one bit in the final outcome.

Personally I'm likely going to vote 3rd party; probably for Bob Barr.

To digress a bit, both the major candidates are very similar; more of the same - anyone doubting that need only look at the recent 700 billion bailout package - both McCain and Obama supported it right away even back when it was only 3 pages giving the govt a blank check.

Notice in the debates he didn't once even look at Obama. After it, Obama took the initiative to shake McCain's hand and say "Good job John". I think how she does all depends on the format of the debate. If they are asked regular questions and given a few minutes to answer and she can stick to the script she has spent the last few days memorizing she will do fine. When she could get into trouble is when they ask about things she is unprepared for of if they let the candidates ask each other questions. Biden has been around forever and has had years to learn this stuff so he is well prepared for this. She has been around a matter of weeks and has had to cram for it. Her problem is that when she doesn't know the answer to something she double talks and it makes her look like an idiot. If they start hitting her with things she is unprepared for it could get really ugly for her.

I think all she really has to do to help McCain out here is to do okay. She doesn't have to knock the ball out of the park, she just has come off decently. Also she is a radical religous conservative and she needs to be able to effectivly hide that during the debate. Her views are good for the party base, but not for the general public. If she lets it slip that she thinks books should be banned or even rape and incest victims should be forced to have their babies she will turn off a lot of the independent voters.

Tonight she can't really help McCain a whole lot, but if she fucks up she can hurt him badly. He is on the ropes and she could cause him a lot of heartache by screwing up tonight. She might surprise people by doing decently, but I think the odds are that she will not. All the spotlights are on her.

The only thing would be the abortion policy question, but I'm not sure they're going to cover that again. I think it's a non-issue at this point. The conservative base loves her pro-life stance, liberals don't. Nobody is going to gain or lose ground on that. I don't think they're going to get into personal beliefs either which has been covered in interviews. I think focus is going to be on policy, experience, "how you would handle" this situation type of questions, economy. And focus/attacks will be levelled at the top of each ticket. Anything personal that may be damaging can probably be easily avoided in her answers.

My feeling is that script or no script, chances are she's going to struggle. The interviews weren't long in duration and she had to fumble around with answers. This is 90 minutes of presumably indepth discussion. For somebody that doesn't seem to be knowleagable on national and international affairs and economic policy, or even the track record of her own running mate, it'll be trying. But it can be pulled off. The best thing to do is the turn every question around somehow to focus on Obama and try to showcase his weaknesses.

I just think that lots of "prep" for a debate like this for somebody so unprepared is like cramming for an exam at the last minute when you didn't even go to classes throughout the school year. I've done it, and it didn't turn out well.

The moderator is allowed to ask any question she chooses, and I wouldn't be surprised to see her ask at least one that will throw Palin off track a little.
When Palin goes off track, all bets are off. Just look at the Katie Couric interview. Palin tried to use lots of buzzwords and smarmy anecdotes and she came across looking like a babbling idiot. She had no idea about what she was saying, and she tried to cover it up with smart talk and it backfired on her.
Just one of those moments tonight and it will be the thing people talk about all week.
Biden on the other hand has to reign in his verbose talk and ONLY refer to Palin as Gov. Palin and then he should do pretty well.

Now, notice, all over GFY, and other boards, and in the local news.. and everywhere, everyone is saying, and worse, believing those two things.

1. It's already hurting McCain and will only get worse. Lowering expectations doesn't let anyone off the hook - it just means we already know how much that person sucks. Why the fuck would you lower your expectations when voting for the President/Vice President of America? For ANY reason? Isn't this the part where, rather than accepting lowered expectations, americans should stand up and say "WTF? - Are you kidding? YOU want to be Vice President? HAHAHAHA"?

Did your boss ever say to you "you really can't do the job I hired you for, but I've lowered my expectations, so I'll give you the promotion you don't deserve". If McCain/Palin wins, that's exactly what the boss is doing.

2. Biden does NOT have to be nice. He has to remain professional, and courteous, and that's it. God.. Americans have become such pussies over the last few decades that we think a guy has to pull punches in a debate between the two candidates running for the second most powerful position in the world, only because he's debating a mentally-challenged cult member from the backwoods.. and a female.

I hope Biden shreds her to pieces on the issues, all the while smiling, staying calm, and not saying anything stupid.

I'd refer to anything in her direction as 'the McCain campaign'.. That prevents any danger of people yelling sexist as much and gives him a bit more room to stretch..

Her views are good for the party base, but not for the general public. If she lets it slip that she thinks books should be banned or even rape and incest victims should be forced to have their babies she will turn off a lot of the independent voters. Tonight she can't really help McCain a whole lot, but if she fucks up she can hurt him badly. He is on the ropes and she could cause him a lot of heartache by screwing up tonight. She might surprise people by doing decently, but I think the odds are that she will not. All the spotlights are on her.

When Palin goes off track, all bets are off. Just look at the Katie Couric interview. Palin tried to use lots of buzzwords and smarmy anecdotes and she came across looking like a babbling idiot. She had no idea about what she was saying, and she tried to cover it up with smart talk and it backfired on her. Just one of those moments tonight and it will be the thing people talk about all week. Biden on the other hand has to reign in his verbose talk and ONLY refer to Palin as Gov. Palin and then he should do pretty well. __________________ Old School

At first I felt that Biden was going to murder Palin but now it seems that everyone has completely lowered their expectations to the point that if Palin even survives she wins. Not only that but Biden has to "play nice" and be easy on her. Sad... I really think she is an idiot but I also do not think i would be able to answer most of the questions any better then her... but then again... I am NOT RUNNING for VP and she shouldn't be either!
