I'd have to disagree. Equilibrium cribbed way too hard from 1984 and Brave New World. Was the Matrix entirely original? No. But 1984 and Brave New World are highschool syllabus books and are foundation learning for a lot of people. It gets to the point where if you see one new movie/book with a version of Soma you want to punch the screen/page because you feel like you're watching a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy and may as well be just watching it for the gunplay.. so really, any straight to dvd (which i think it was) Chuck Norris or Steven Seagal movie. It was just wrapped up in a setting that borrowed interest from other more interesting and literate works.
If you want to compare the Matrix to something, try Dark City... Although they were released far too closely together for Matrix to be a ripoff. They were probably in filming at the same time.

Keep em' coming people.

For those who didn't see The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford, I really do suggest you give it a chance (I didn't want to either).

It was Andrew Dominik's second movie after CHOPPER with Eric Bana and Roger Deacons shot the cinematography (shoots all the coen brother movies) and Sam Rockwell was in it.. Fucking shocking how good it was in my opinion, don't miss it even if you hate brad pitt like me.
That was the best movie of 2007. It showed how hard it is to be around someone who is a terrifying sociopath. Seems very slow, but there's so much going on. Probably the most uncomfortable I've felt watching a flick in a long time.

Some films that really nobody have seen:

I Kina spiser de hunde

My favorite: Dogville

Be carefull with Dogville its a long movie. And most would turn it off after 15 minutes. This movie is full of violence! But its a movie for woman, too.

And of course all other movies made by Lars von Trier

I got one...

Lone Star (1996) More at IMDb Pro »

John Sayles' murder-mystery explores interpersonal and interracial tensions in Rio County, Texas. Sam Deeds is the local sheriff who is called to investigate a 40-year-old skeleton found in the desert....As Sam delves deeper into the town's dark secrets, he begins to learn more about his father, the legendary former sheriff Buddy Deeds, who replaced the corrupt Charlie Wade. While Sam puzzles out the long-past events surrounding the mystery corpse, he also longs to rekindle a romance with his old high-school flame. Sayles' complex characters are brought together as the tightly woven plot finally draws to its dramatic close. Written by Tad Dibbern {[email protected]}

Sam Deeds is the Sheriff of Rio County, TX and to some extent, he lives in the shadow of his late father, the venerated former sheriff, Buddy Deeds. Sam had always had a difficult relationship with his father, especially during his teenage years when Buddy absolutely forbade him to see a pretty Hispanic girl, Pilar Cruz. Local mythology has Buddy Deeds, when only a sheriff's deputy, murdering the corrupt and violent sheriff of the day, Charlie Wade. When Wade's remains are found in the desert, Sam finds himself investigating his father and slowly peels away at the story from the perspective of its long-term residents including a local bar owner, Pilar's mother and the former mayor. What Sam learns shows his father in a different light and has a direct impact on his own life choices. Written by garykmcd

Great flick!!

V for Vendetta: EXCELLENT, poorly advertised when it came out. Wonder why... (if you watch it, you'll know why)
Grandma's Boy: Also hysterical, and not promoted well. Adam Sandler's crew as a bunch of pothead video gamers.

Eurotrip was pretty fucking hilarious. Check that one out. It's pretty funny throughout, but there are about 5 scenes that are side-splitting funny. I was so caught off guard with that movie.

Bringing this thread back to make sure everyone has made a contribution.

I have watched some fantastic movies from this thread the past few weeks.

Does anyone know any more good UK movies or period pieces?

Foreign epics welcome too

Yeah,

it's getting more and more difficult to find a good movie that I haven't seen.

Not too long ago I started dipping into the foreign films, as I am a big fan of period pieces.

I only wish this thread would stay constant with more spectacular suggestions

Movies from this thread I watched that I normally wouldn't have that qualified:

Downfall
The Lives Of Others
Amelie
Gangster #1
A Very Long Engagement
Pu 239
Cashback
Dead Mans Shoes
That one Dinner movie i can't remember the title of.. Le Diner cons or something.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head, some classics in there I had no idea of.

A new suggestion I have for you is "The Magician" 2005 australian movie, really liked it.

It's getting harder and harder to find good movies I haven't seen, so keep them up!

Hunger

Directed by Steve McQueen. About the 1981 hunger strikes in the Maze Prison just outside Belfast and specifically about the leader of those hunger strikes: Bobby Sands.

Bump because I'm glad I bookmarked this thread!

I'm going to add:
Girl By the Lake (Italian, awesome murder mystery)
Almost Heaven (German, it's hard to make me cry but I was weepy at the end.)
Mother (Korean, another mystery)
Irreversible (hard to watch, but really good in that Requiem for a Dream sort of way)
