Anyone use a Drobo? I'm thinking of getting one.

Tired of having a stack of external hard drives and then throwing them away every time there are higher capacity drives. Would be nice to have the redundancy and be able to easily upgrade capacity as drive capacity increases. |

Being able to share files between Mac and PC easily with the share will save me a lot of headache.

I use traditional RAID, but that thing looks pretty nice and a lot more versatile than my RAID1 setup. |

I've been watching and wanting this thing since it was announced. It looks like an amazing product and I think I'll have to join everyone on getting one.

I just wish they were able to link an endless amount to each other, instead of just 2.
but I guess a potential 16tb*2 drive is big enough... eer, 16*(2/3)... 10tb each, 20tb drive... still ain't so bad for raid5 style protection and speed. but, ATM.. the max is a 6*(2/3) = 4.1tb per box. 8.2 total max with 2 boxes. I'm sure they will come out with a "professional" grade series of their product with more bays, or more able to link together... something. "Now introducing Drobo Pro. for small AND large businesses!" Or a competitor mimicking their same tricky raid5/mirror setup. I basically want it just for storage, with low level accessing... not a main server. but I bet it could act pretty nice as a web server of some kind (unprotected), since it can be a network drive with the droboshare addition. Course... if you had a router that let you run your own software on it... you could scan the cookies from the user for their session ID and run a DB query to check permissions. but I don't know much about the super high end expensive routers and what they are capable of... |

Are you still using a Power Mac or something? I haven't had trouble sharing files between the two in years.

Kewl
I was trying to read about it but wasn't really awake yet still in bed before morning espresso. We have been buying RAIDs from macsales.com and this looks so much better.

What's so bad about SATA? SATA drives are cheap and fast. You can get 1tb ones for around $100.

Whoa the read/write speed sucks major ass for the first gen. The second gen is "ok" if you were just storing files with it.

I want it.. and I want it NOW!
connection devices will increase over time... it's the 2nd gen of a decent product using existing technology in a logical way. It's got plenty of room to grow. |
