Affiliate program pays you too much... what do you do?

Some company just wired me a few thousand dollars more than they were supposed to, so naturally, I contacted an affiliate manager about it.

I was talking about it with a friend, though, and he basically called me crazy for letting them know. He figured it was their problem, and theirs to notice.

Me, I prefer honesty.

So what about you? Would you or wouldn't you let them know?

Same happened to be a couple of times. I told them. I prefer honesty too. And, from a business stand-point, a few thousand might seem good, but it's nothing compared to what you get when a sponsor trusts and respects you and your business.

Best to be honest, last thing you want is for them to notice the mistake and ban you for taking advantage?

You credit their account and they should just take off the difference in the next payout. If they don't notice, someone isn't doing their job in accounting.

In fairness, this sponsor paid me over $100k over the past few years, so from a business standpoint, staying friendly with them is definitely better.

3 times i got paid to much, i paid back on wire to get clean
It is more then fucking normal to pay back the 'to much' payment.
if you think that it is not normal, then your not a business men.

Everyone in my surrounding called me a fool, but those who say do not make a dime, thats why they say it

Getting to much paid is not a gift, it is a mistake.
What would you demand from your affiliates when you make this overpayment mistake? Honesty? Indeed... Karma men..karma...

I fully agree with you.

Frankly, it kinda baffles me that people would see it differently.

yes, I would. A client paid me 13K too much last month. I mailed him right away and he was happy with that info. Honesty makes good future bizz instead of quick $

What if it was some non adult sponsor and little more $$ was on the line? lets say google adsense, instead of getting 5k wire, someone fucked things up, and you got 50k wire instead?

Personally, I'd only stay silent if it was a truly negligible amount (because I wouldn't notice), or if it was the government.

Government; I paid my profit taxes for 2006 today around noon. Spend 10 mins. before I hit the send button in internet banking. I even got my brother in there and said; "Look, this is going out today...and half is your money". But then I started thinking about hospitals, the sick, the poor, the elderly, the needing ones and I just approved all these hard earned euros by hitting the send button and start to forget the fact I just paid it instantly and get on with new exciting deals of today. My brother just replied; "At least we are making some money otherwise we would not have to pay anything."

I once had a final payment (including all reserves) from a biller sent twice, in two separate wires. I could have walked away since I wasn't due to receive any further $ from them, and I was in a different country which would make collection difficult... but I did the right thing and returned the second wire. :D They would have lost about $100 in fees and currency conversions but they still got back about $4k.

We've had that happen once with an over-payment of $1500.

I took the honest route - contacted them and notified them of their error. They told us to keep the payout and they'd deduct it from future payouts.

They kept their accounting in order and made the deductions exact to the penny.

Problem solved to both our satisfaction.

I know at least one webmaster, of an older AVS system that changed his account from checks to wires, and they sent him both for more than a year. He kept every penny, and we're not talking little amounts either. Made me laugh.

I would never keep money sent to me on mistake..

I'd feel extremely guilty and how do I know they won't come looking for the money later.

I don't want to be responsible for anything...

.......and they do deduct from your stats... You think there is 1 sponsor in this industry who MIGHT do what you think they MIGHT do when you come forward. I run 10 years and what you think MIGHT happen is NOT going to happen. When it comes down to numbers and money....... brrrr you ever thought about thinking before posting this?

One time someone completely randomly wired $30K to my bank account. Not long after I got a call from the bank saying there had been a problem and they had to move the money back, so they did.

There was a story several years ago in AU where a woman suddenly had a million dollars in her account. She transferred something like $100k to another account then back to confirm it was "real" (and not just a reporting error) then contacted the bank.

The kicker is that we had a tax on deposits at the time. I think it was only something like 0.4%, but that ends up being $800 in fees because the transfers were two deposits. The bank refused to waive the fees even though it was their error that deposited the $$$ into her account in the first place, so she ended up $800 out of pocket.
