fuck it if you don't need windows then go linux, no bull shit. I would go linux however I need specific windows applications but as soon as I don't I'll go linux full time, I already have used it extensively and know the command line anyway.

slow down computer, how much ram do you have? i'd recommend atleast 2gigs of good ram, not the discount cheap ram

no streaming media on the web? uhh i don't think thats a vista os issue directly might be a setting that you have turned off or something

i have vista on 4 machines with no prob, ones a portable UMPC (OQO Model 2) with 1.5gig ram, and i have no issues. I download and install a lot of crap, and i have yet to experience i problem or slow down that i can blame directly on vista. maybe its cause i updating all my software and drivers on stuff, but i just dont see why vista gets a bad wrap.

only thing i can think of is Aero's that might slow it down with all the transparencey stuff, if you turn that off should be fine

Ya no idea what the thread starter is talking about Vista streams online video WAY better than Xp did. WAY less issues, runs WAY faster for me.

Mine is coming with XP with the license to upgrade if I decide to try Vista. Which isn't likely.

Does your laptop come with a recovery CD that does a fresh install of Vista? If so, do your XP thing, if you ever need to claim warranty services backup your data, then insert the recovery CD. Instant Vista install. If they ask why there's no user data tell 'em you tried the recovery CD to fix the prob.

some laptop maker are not making drivers for XP for some models...
for example Toshiba laptops have drivers only for Vista so you can't downgrade to XP even if you want to...

I've never had any issues with Vista. Just bought another Windows box the other day and though I'm more of a Mac user, I still have yet to understand why people dislike Vista so much. Must be the machines they're buying or using. Can't you buy 2 gig of RAM for under $100?

Those Microsoft "Mojave Experiment" commercials are entertaining.

I haven't tried Vista yet. Probably wont for as long as I can put it off.

However...I've had the misfortune of having to use Office 2007 on a few of my clients machines and I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT!!

If you ONLY have 2Gb RAM I'd say thats not enough. I don't play games so my video card doesn't have much RAM so I have 4Gb in mine. 32 bit vista can only use 4Gb total RAM and 64 bit is slower for most things still so I'm holding out a bit longer and tossing 8Gb in when I go 64 bit.

Windows Server 2008 and vista are my current dual boots on the main workstation. XP/Ubuntu on workstation 2. Server 2008 is based on Vista only faster. I prefer using that BUT there's some compatibility issues so Server for everyday use and Vista for compatibility ;)

I'll stick to XP, if i leave XP, its to Mac OS X
