Katrina Videos, the horror, the crime

http://60minutes.yahoo.com/segment/1...ricane_katrina

Wow, I just don't see why we as people do not hold some government officials criminally
liable for that debacle.

Boy, we sure got aid to Georgia real fast. 1000's of miles away on the other side of
the planet got relief that our own people at home could not get.

I was in the army reserve and part of our mission was to respond to stuff like
this. The national guard and the army reserves has 1000's of helicopters that could
have been used, some were in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we still had plenty left.
There is plenty of footage shot from news helicopters so flying was possible.

C130 air craft could have easily flown thru and dropped food and water to the ground
and none of that was done from what I can tell.

There really is no excuse for the length of time that went by without the most basic of
disaster responses being done.

I don't buy the bureaucracy thing.

The system to respond is well in place and only needs to be activated.

Someone just needed to give the order.

One of the biggest crimes is that you even mentioned the mayor.
He had no resources to respond; but the state and feds fed you this crap and you
believe it.

The police force of New Orleans didn't want to die anymore than you do and more than
half the police fled the city.

The reason he's still mayor is because he was the only one screamming for help.

That was a multi-state disaster and you blame the smallest leader you can because
he has the least power to fight back.

The mayor does not command the national guard, the governor does.

At most the mayor has 5 air craft at his command and that would be all small helicopters
with no passenger space to speak of.

Please remember that it was not the huricane that hit New Orleans that caused the
disaster. Katrina missed N.O. and hit in Mississippi and the Mississippi river overflowed
and made it's way to N.O. Mississippi was in disaster too but the news didn't focus
there because the number of people affected was more in N.O.

So it required a multi-state response, the activation of the national guard of several
states and the active push from the president to get things moving.

None of that happened.

Blaming the mayor of N.O. is like shooting a man in the foot and then accusing him of unlawful bleeding.

Actually the Feds activated it's forces on Sunday the day before katrina hit. However, people don't know that the President cannot send Feds in to a state without the state approving it. Blanco wouldn't let the feds in until 4 days after Katrina hit and the Red Cross had hundreds of thousands of bottles of water and ice sitting 7 miles from the city and they wouldn't let them in until Saturday.

The coast Guard was immediately providing assistance, it just wasn't enough. Every level of government wasn't ready. Same thing happened during Andrew, here in Florida.

Yeah, you refreshed my memory.

Also this falls in line with my point that the governor didn't do enough and the mayor
was completely without power or resources. But I never really here anyone giving
Blanco shit about the 4 day delay.

But hey, they elected a new governor now and good!

Exactly! At least the new governor already declared a national disaster, and asked for assistance, so this BS won't occur again.

Uhh no.

Their was no proper system in place for this type of emergency and it did not just need 1 person to give the order.

Bureaucracy fucked up. Maybe you don't know what Bureaucracy means?
